I was half watching and then the goal went in and the whole room just woke up proper because you could feel what it meant straight away and that is what football does to you sometimes even when the game itself has been a bit of a slog and I know people will say it was ugly but I honestly love these moments where a team gets to celebrate something that has been a long time coming

The officials let that game get completely bogged down and then acted surprised when it turned into a stop start mess from the first whistle to the last because every little thing became a delay and every restart took ages and nothing was done to speed it up and that is exactly how you kill a knockout tie when one side is already happy to sit deep and waste time and the referee just lets the whole thing drift along until the crowd is frustrated and the players are frustrated and everyone watching at home is losing their mind because there is no rhythm and no urgency and then people wonder why the game looks poor when the people in charge of the game do nothing to keep it moving and honestly it was a joke from an officiating point of view

I was in the pub when this came on and there was a group of Canada fans by the screen who had been quiet for most of the night just nervously laughing every time the ball went backwards and then when the goal went in the place absolutely erupted and people who did not even care about the match were suddenly on their feet shouting like it was their own team and that is why these tournament moments are brilliant because you can feel the pressure change in the room instantly and I have seen plenty of big club games and derby days and all that but there is something special about a nation getting a result they have waited years for and everyone around you knowing it matters even if the football itself was not the prettiest thing in the world
