Class tribute to Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park

some of you lot acting like you discovered football yesterday because a nice tribute happened and now suddenly its all class and heritage and unity as if thats not the bare minimum when a legend is being honoured calm down and enjoy the moment instead of writing poetry about it

You can tell this one landed because even the away end got involved and that usually does not happen unless the tribute really means something. Keegan clearly has that kind of pull across clubs, tbh

The key thing here is that the tribute felt coordinated without losing its emotion. Those kinds of displays only work when the crowd understands the moment and both sets of supporters clearly did.

And of course the officials would somehow still manage to be a talking point in a moment like this because football can never just let a classy tribute breathe without someone in a black shirt finding a way to make it about themselves or interrupting the flow with some needless nonsense and then you have people in the stands trying to enjoy the moment while the game itself is already being dragged into the usual mess and it is exactly why referees get no respect because every week they make everything feel more awkward than it needs to be

Saw something like this down the pub once where a lad had his phone out showing everyone a tribute from years back and the whole table just went quiet for a bit because even the biggest gobshites know when a moment is a moment, and this has that same feel to it, just a proper football thing where rival fans stop being rivals for five minutes and remember the game has history and people attached to it and that is what makes these nights stick in your head

This is exactly why football still gets you in the chest sometimes because one minute you are expecting the usual noise and the next you are looking at both sets of fans pulling in the same direction for a man who clearly meant something huge to the game and you cannot fake that kind of atmosphere no matter how hard clubs try with all the glossy nonsense and corporate stuff and all the people online trying to act above it can honestly piss off because if you cannot see the beauty in a moment like this then you have missed the whole point of being a football fan

Wor Flags have absolutely smashed it again and the away fans joining in is the bit that makes it even better because it stops it feeling like a home crowd circlejerk and turns it into something proper shared which is rare these days when everyone is usually too busy trying to outdo each other with noise and nonsense
