Code red air in New York before the World Cup final

nah i dont buy the idea that this was impossible to foresee, people knew about wildfire smoke being a thing and if youre hosting in a place that can get hit by it then you plan for it instead of scrambling now

This looks like a genuine planning issue rather than just bad luck. If the city is issuing a Code Red alert and players are already dealing with mandatory breaks elsewhere, then the conditions are clearly affecting sport as well as daily life.

I remember being in a pub years ago when the smoke from a distant fire made the place look like somebody had put orange film over the windows and everyone was pretending it was a normal summer evening while coughing into their pints and complaining about the weather, and this feels exactly like that but on a massive stage with cameras everywhere and suits acting like they can just power through it because the event has already been sold. The thing is once the air gets that bad people do not care about your scheduling and your branding and your grand plans, they care about breathing and getting home and not feeling like theyve got sand in their lungs, and now the whole football world is talking about weather apps and contingency plans like its a pub argument at 11pm

A sensible reaction would be to wait and see whether the air clears before making any dramatic calls. If it does improve by the weekend, then the panic will look a bit silly, but if it does not, the organisers are obviously going to have a problem on their hands.

i was supposed to be on a trip around that area and seeing people say you cant even see the statue of liberty from battery park is wild because that is the kind of thing you hear and think nah surely not and then you realise its real and it just feels weird and kind of depressing

I am sorry but people need to stop acting like this is just unlucky for one player or one team because the conditions are the issue and if anyone is trying to force this through then that is on them, not on the lads having to breathe in smoke and somehow put on a show. The whole setup around this final has been treated like some untouchable event and now the reality has slapped everyone in the face, and if the organisers were smart they would be looking at every possible adjustment instead of hoping nobody notices how bad it is, because once the air is this poor there is no point pretending it is business as usual and just expecting one player to carry everyone through a mess like this

This is exactly the sort of problem that makes people question the venue choice in the first place. If the air can become this bad so close to the final, then the organisers should have had a much clearer backup plan imo
