DR Congo fans chanting Messi at Ronaldo

The officials always let this stuff go until it becomes a massive talking point and then suddenly everyone is surprised, which is the same story every time with football matches and crowd antics. If they wanted to clamp down on it they could, but they never do until the clip is already viral and everyone has picked a side, and then you get the usual nonsense about respect, passion, banter and all the rest of it while the referees and match organisers stand there looking like they have never seen a crowd before, absolute joke really because the whole thing ends up being about management and control as much as it is about the players

I get why people laugh at it, but honestly I think the whole thing is a bit overblown because Ronaldo is still one of the most watched players in the world and every little crowd moment gets turned into a referendum on his entire career. The chant is obviously meant to wind him up, but that does not mean he is somehow weak or finished or whatever people want to scream online, it just means supporters know how to make noise and get attention. He is 41, he is still out there, and whether people like it or not that takes a certain level of professionalism and stubbornness that most players would not have. So yes, the chant is cheeky, but the endless mockery afterwards is a bit much and says more about the people posting than the player himself

It is a clever bit of banter, but it only matters if he bites. He did not, so the crowd did not really get the full payoff.

nah i dont buy that this is some genius psychological warfare, its just lads copying the same old internet joke because they know it gets clipped and shared, half of them probably dont even care about either player they just want the reaction and the likes and then everyone acts like they are experts on mentality

The chant is obvious bait, but the key detail is that he did not give them the reaction they wanted. That makes the whole thing less about humiliation and more about composure.
