Fair play to Gavi, that is a proper thing to do and it stands out even more because it is for his hometown. Too often you only hear about footballers when they are flaunting money, so seeing someone put that kind of cash into housing for homeless people is genuinely refreshing.

It also says a lot about how tied some players are to where they came from. Whatever people think of him on the pitch, this is the sort of story that makes you respect a lad a bit more. The amount is massive as well, and you cannot really downplay how much of a difference that could make.

Hopefully it actually helps people in Los Palacios y Villafranca in a real way and does not just become a nice headline for a day. Still, credit where it is due, this is class from Gavi.
 
People are acting like this is some kind of miracle when really it should embarrass every government and council that leaves people homeless in the first place because a footballer having to step in with 1.3 million is mad enough on its own but fair play to Gavi for actually doing something useful with his money instead of flashing cars and watches, he is still a young lad and he is already helping his own community while half the people in power just talk absolute nonsense and do nothing, so yeah I am not having any of the weird sneering at him because this is exactly the sort of thing that deserves praise
 
Had a similar chat in the pub last night actually because one of the lads was moaning about footballers earning too much and then this sort of story comes up and it changes the mood completely, because at the end of the day if a player wants to put proper money back into their own town for something like housing then that is hard to criticise, we were all saying you can tell who has not forgotten where they came from and who has just got carried away with the lifestyle, and honestly it reminded me of when my old man used to say the good ones always look after their own first, bit of a throwback that, proper respect to Gavi for it really
 
This is exactly the kind of thing that should be getting more attention because people are always banging on about football being all ego and nonsense but then a lad like Gavi goes and puts 1.3 million into housing for homeless people in his hometown and suddenly it feels like maybe there is a bit of humanity left in the sport after all, and before anyone starts with the usual yeah but he earns loads nonsense, so what, plenty of people with far more money do absolutely nothing and still want praise for the tiniest donation, this is a serious amount and it is going to matter to real people, that is the bit that gets lost when everything is about highlight clips and transfer fees and who posted what on social media, fair play to him
 
It is a smart use of money because it targets something concrete rather than just making a splash. When players give back to their local area, it tends to mean more than a generic charity gesture because there is a direct link to the community.
 
I think people underestimate how much this kind of thing matters locally, especially when it is tied to a player who is actually from there. It feels more personal than a random headline donation, imo
 
People keep saying this is the government’s job and yeah of course it is but that does not make what Gavi is doing any less impressive does it, if anything it shows a bit of class and awareness that a lot of public figures completely lack, so I dont get the weird attitude some have about it
 
Honestly, this is the sort of thing that makes you look at a player differently because you can tell it is not just some polished media line, it is his own hometown and he is putting serious money into housing for homeless people, that actually means something. It is easy to be cynical about footballers and fair enough sometimes they deserve it, but this is a young player showing real maturity and a sense of responsibility that loads of older, richer people never seem to find, and if he keeps his injury issues behind him as people are saying then even better, but even if the football side goes up and down this is the kind of legacy that sticks, proper respect to him for doing it and not just talking about it, makes a lot of other people look small tbh
 
There is a wider point here about footballers and community ties that gets overlooked because everyone wants to turn everything into a culture war or a wage debate, but when someone from a place gives back to that place it usually lands differently with people on the ground. Then again the internet will still find a way to make it about Barcelona, La Masia, injuries, or whatever else people fancy arguing about that day, which is kind of exhausting really, because the actual story is simple and decent and it does not need dressing up with a load of agenda nonsense, just credit the lad and move on
 
I know people will focus on the donation itself and fair enough but I cannot help thinking about how much pressure gets put on these young lads because every time Gavi is mentioned it is either about him being some sort of symbol or about his injuries or about what he represents rather than just the football and now this too and it is all well intentioned but it also becomes this constant burden of expectation where he has to be perfect on and off the pitch and if he is not then people pile in, but in this case I am just glad he is doing something genuinely useful because at least it is not another empty PR stunt and that is more than can be said for a lot of people in the game
