ICE at the World Cup is madness

This World Cup is already shaping up to be a mess before a ball is kicked. Having immigration officers at matches instead of just normal policing is such a bizarre and ugly decision, and it feels like it will only make things worse for everyone involved.

It is hard to see how this helps anyone. Fans are supposed to be there for football, not worrying about being stopped, questioned, or dragged into something they did not come for. That kind of atmosphere is the opposite of what a World Cup should be.

And on top of that, it makes the whole tournament look even more hostile to foreign fans. Whether this is posturing or not, it is a terrible look for the host and a proper own goal for the people running it.

From a security standpoint, putting immigration enforcement inside a huge football event is a nightmare because you are mixing crowd control with a completely different agenda. It is one thing to have police managing safety, tickets, and disorder, but this creates fear before fans even arrive and that will change behaviour in the stands and around the stadiums. It is not just bad optics, it is a recipe for confusion and tension, and whoever signed off on it either does not understand football culture or does not care. And the worst bit is they will act surprised when it all kicks off, as if people packed into a stadium after a few drinks are going to calmly accept being hassled by these lot, honestly what a stupid, nasty, joyless mess of an idea, ffs

feels like every update about this tournament gets worse and im honestly just tired of it already like you should be thinking about the football and the travel and having a good time but instead its all fear and nonsense and people getting treated like suspects before theyve even got through the gate

The officials are already making this a joke before the tournament even starts because how are you supposed to separate normal crowd management from immigration enforcement at a football match, it makes no sense at all and if anyone gets singled out by the wrong people it is going to be a complete disaster. You cannot just throw that kind of power into a massive event and pretend it will be fine because it will not be fine, someone is going to overstep, somebody innocent is going to get dragged into it, and then everyone will act shocked like there was no way to see it coming. The whole thing stinks of intimidation and incompetence and it is exactly the sort of thing that turns a sporting event into a political mess, absolutely disgraceful from start to finish, piss off with it

I can see why people are alarmed by this, because the combination of football crowds and immigration enforcement is bound to create tension. Even if the intention is just visibility or deterrence, the effect will be people feeling unwelcome before they have even entered the ground. That is a bad way to host a World Cup.

From a football point of view this is terrible because the whole point of a host tournament is to make travelling fans feel safe enough to spend money and actually turn up. If the setup makes people nervous, then the atmosphere suffers, the crowds suffer, and the event loses the buzz it is meant to have.

nah i dont buy the idea that this is just nothing and people are overreacting because if you normalise this kind of thing at a world cup then you are already halfway to ruining the whole thing and pretending its fine doesnt make it fine

This is the sort of thing that turns one player into the story for all the wrong reasons because one random stop, one mistaken identity, one officer with an attitude and suddenly the whole tournament is about that instead of football and people will point at the player, blame the fan, blame the crowd, blame the victim and the actual issue gets buried under noise. It is maddening because there is no need for this at a football event, none at all, and yet they still manage to make it feel threatening, humiliating and completely unnecessary every single time with this kind of nonsense
