Liverpool set to appoint Iraola

It is a reasonable appointment, but Liverpool are asking for a very quick adaptation. The upside is obvious, though the margin for error will be tiny.
 
The officials will be loving this if Liverpool get edgy under a new manager because every tight call will become a storyline and every little thing will be magnified, and that is before we even get to the fact that refs in this country already seem to make games about themselves far too often, so if the first few results wobble you just know the whole place will be talking nonsense about decisions instead of actually watching the football and it does my head in
 
There is a real chance this looks inspired in six months if the football clicks and the squad responds, because the profile is there and the style is not some random gamble. But if the early results are messy then the whole thing will get turned into a debate about whether he was ready, whether the club should have gone for someone else, whether the squad was built for this, and suddenly every little problem becomes a crisis and everyone loses their heads and it all gets stupid very quickly
 
It is a sensible hire if Liverpool want a coach with a clear identity rather than a safe compromise. The main question is whether he can translate that identity to a squad that will be expected to compete every few days, because that is where a lot of promising managers get exposed.
 
He will need the team to press together and keep the distances tight or the whole thing gets stretched at this level and then the counters start flying, and if the midfield does not protect the back line properly then it will look chaotic very quickly because top sides punish every little gap and every poor transition
 
i get why people are nervous but i also think some are overdoing it a bit because the guy has earned the chance and not every step up has to be framed like a disaster waiting to happen, yes liverpool is a different beast and yes the pressure will be mad but thats also why the appointment is interesting and if he gets a proper summer and the club actually gives him what he needs then it could be a very smart move
