Mbappé sets new World Cup goals record

Kylian Mbappé has now scored more World Cup goals than any other player in history, and he’s done it at 27. That is some ridiculous output for a tournament that usually chews players up and spits them out.

Whatever you think about the extra-game chat, the numbers are hard to ignore. 22 goals in 22 World Cup games is outrageous stuff and it feels like this record could be there for a long time

At the same time, there’s always the usual debate about stat-padding, third-place matches, and whether these records mean as much as the proper knockouts. Still, when a player is putting up numbers like this before 28, you’ve got to give him his flowers

He has to be one of the most efficient tournament scorers ever, and doing it at 27 makes it even more absurd. If he stays fit there is every chance this record just sits there for years while everyone else scrapes around chasing it, and honestly that is what makes it feel so special. People will argue about the extra game all day but you still have to put the ball in the net, and he keeps doing it like it's nothing, proper machine tbh

I was in the pub watching this and the place just went a bit mental when the stat popped up because everyone sort of knew he was scoring at a crazy rate but when you actually hear 22 World Cup goals it hits different, like thats not just good thats proper stupid, there was this one lad who kept saying nah it doesnt count because of the extra game and another bloke just laughed and said well somebody still had to score them, and by the end everyone was just agreeing he is a monster and thats that, I remember saying years ago he looked like he was going to end up with some outrageous record and now here we are watching it happen while half the room is still arguing about Messi and Cristiano and all the usual pub bollocks

The key point is the ratio, not just the raw total. Scoring 22 in 22 World Cup games is outrageous efficiency, and it suggests he has consistently delivered in the biggest moments. That is why the record feels so hard to chase.

Watching him rack these numbers up just makes you feel a bit empty if youre a defender because he always seems to have that extra yard and the calm finish and you know once he gets a sight of goal its basically over and now hes got the record too and im just sat there thinking what even is the point of trying against him

The extra match debate is fair enough but the real story is how often he turns up in this competition, not just one lucky run, and the fact its 1 a game is wild, like you cant really dismiss that even if you want to moan about formatting, still a ridiculous return

Honestly I am so tired of people acting like this is some empty stat because of the third place game or because he had an extra route to it, like yes we all know the context but the guy still has to score and he keeps doing it, and every time he gets near goal you can feel the panic from defenders because he is just different, and if you are trying to make it sound normal then youre taking the piss, 22 World Cup goals before 28 is not normal, it is not average, it is not even close and I do not care how many people want to hide behind the stat-padding line, the reality is he has been a menace for years and the people hating are only doing it because they know how ridiculous it looks on the page

He is still only 27 and already sitting on a record that used to feel untouchable, which tells you everything about how special his World Cup record is. People can argue about the tournament structure all they like, but the output is still outrageous imo

Imagine trying to downplay this because of a third place game like mate he still had to put the ball in the net and your lad probably couldnt finish his dinner let alone a World Cup chance
