Mbappé sets new World Cup goals record

the man is collecting world cup records like stickers and everyone else is just standing there watching it happen mate absolute madness

The cleanest reading of this is that Mbappe has produced elite tournament output for years and now has the record to show for it. That said, the whole conversation around third-place matches and extra games is never going away because people only like records when they fit the story they already wanted, and once you start poking at it the whole thing turns into a mess of excuses and counter-excuses and tribal nonsense, which is exactly why football discourse gets so unbearable, because instead of just saying wow that is an incredible return people have to make it about their rival and their agenda and their little online war and then suddenly every thread is full of nonsense and I am sat here wondering why we cant just enjoy a ridiculous player without turning it into another culture war over who is allowed to be impressed and who has to pretend not to care

The measured point is that Mbappe has done something genuinely historic and the numbers back it up, because 22 World Cup goals at 27 is not the sort of thing you can shrug off, even if you want to argue about the shape of the tournament or the value of certain matches. But once people start using that as a shield to dismiss the whole achievement, the conversation gets silly very quickly, because the same people will happily praise other records when they suit them and then suddenly become format experts when it is inconvenient, and that is where I think football talk completely loses the plot, because we are no longer debating the player, we are debating whether we are allowed to be impressed, and at that point it turns into the usual online nonsense where every stat needs a disclaimer and every achievement needs a footnote and every thread ends up as a proxy war for fanbases instead of a discussion about one of the most absurd scorers the World Cup has ever seen
