Mourinho is back to peak press conference chaos

The best part is how he uses the question itself as the opening to the joke. He is not just being witty, he is immediately setting the tone and making the reporter chase him instead of the other way around. That is elite press conference management.

This is why people still tune in for him because the man can take one normal question and turn it into a whole little drama in about two seconds and then everyone online acts like they have discovered fire when really he has been doing this for years and years and years and you can say what you want about his football or his ego or whatever but in the press room he is still basically untouchable because he knows exactly when to smile and when to stab back and when to just let the silence do the work and I swear half the journalists probably walk in already nervous because they know he is going to make them look stupid if they give him even half a chance

People act like this is all just a joke but if youre a fan of the club he is managing then you probably love that he is so sharp and so willing to defend his own space, because the alternative is a manager who gives bland answers and lets every rumour run wild and that gets old very quickly, Mourinho at least has personality and that matters when the pressure is on and everyone is trying to pick at the seams of the dressing room, so yeah maybe it is messy but I would rather have this than some dead eyed corporate robot saying nothing at all and pretending that is leadership

It is hard not to admire how quickly he can take control of a conversation and force everyone to react to him rather than the other way around, because that is a skill very few managers ever really have and it has kept him relevant long after most others would have faded into the background. Even people who cannot stand him still end up talking about him, which says everything about the pull he has on the sport, but at the same time you can feel the irritation building because he always seems to be one step ahead in the little verbal games and it just becomes exhausting for everyone else trying to keep up and honestly I think that is part of the fun and part of the headache at the same time

From a media perspective it is brilliant because he creates a narrative before the football has even started, and from a club perspective it probably keeps the spotlight exactly where he wants it. But then you remember how often this kind of thing becomes the whole story, and suddenly every presser is a referendum on his personality instead of the team, and maybe that is the point, maybe that is why he does it, maybe he wants the oxygen and the noise and the conflict because he thrives on it, and honestly it is mad how he can still make a room feel tense just by smirking for two seconds and people act like it is all normal, it is not normal, it is Jose being Jose and everyone else scrambling

I know people love the banter but the real joke is that Mourinho will probably end up making some poor player or staff member the villain in his head for the rest of the month because he cannot just let a comment breathe, he has to turn it into a whole investigation and a whole mood and a whole thing, and that is exactly why his clubs are always living on a knife edge, one minute he is charming everyone and the next minute somebody is getting publicly side eyed like they have committed treason

The key point is that Mourinho knows the value of tension and he weaponises it better than almost anyone in football. That said, it also feels like he has been playing the same character for so long that the line between genius and habit is getting thinner every year, and once you start thinking about that you realise how much of modern football media has basically been built around people like him who can turn every answer into a headline and every headline into another fight, which is funny until you remember someone has to deal with the fallout and then it becomes less charming and more exhausting and you can see why some people just want it all to go away
