Nine English teams in Europe next season

Crystal Palace winning the Conference League has turned next season into a proper weird one for English football. Nine teams in Europe again is a lot, and it really drives home how stacked the Premier League calendar is going to be.

It also feels mad that this still does not even include Chelsea or Spurs, which makes the whole thing look even more extreme. For some clubs it is brilliant news, but for everyone else it is another reminder that the fixture list is only getting more brutal.

Either way, it is going to be interesting to see who handles the extra games and who starts to fall apart by autumn. The 3pm kick-off merchants are probably already mourning the loss of their Saturdays.

It is a huge number, but the real issue is how the league schedules around it. Some squads can handle the extra load and some will absolutely crumble. The gap between the best prepared clubs and the rest could get even wider.

this is gonna be a nightmare for the teams in europe and the ones chasing top half places cos every week feels like a cup final now and the squads aint deep enough for all that

The tactical side of this is going to be massive because teams with European football usually need two different presses or at least a way to rotate without dropping intensity and a lot of these clubs just dont have that yet so by christmas you can already see who has planned properly and who is winging it week to week

I cant believe some people are acting like this is just fine when half these clubs barely cope with one game a week and then they go into Europe and start looking leggy after 60 minutes every single match and the manager gets blamed like its magic when the squad has been paper thin all along and the same player gets run into the ground for months because there is no backup and everyone pretends it is normal and then they wonder why performances drop off and injuries pile up and honestly if your recruitment has been this bad you deserve every bit of the mess that follows

Nine teams in Europe is mad enough on its own, but the fact that it still feels like the clubs most people expected to be there are the ones missing makes it even stranger. Palace getting a trophy and a European place is great for them, Bournemouth and Sunderland being in the mix is a nice change, and then you look at the rest of the list and think this season has completely broken football logic. The only thing I know for sure is that somebody is going to get absolutely cooked by the schedule and people will pretend it was inevitable all along, which is the usual nonsense really, this league will eat itself if it keeps piling on more and more fixtures for the same handful of squads and then acting surprised when the football gets sloppy and the players look knackered by November

people acting shocked like this wasnt always where the game was heading, the richest league keeps hoovering up places and then everyone acts like its some cosmic accident, proper clown show really
