Olise’s World Cup assist record is madness

Michael Olise becoming the first player to rack up 7 assists in a single World Cup edition is a ridiculous bit of history, even if a few people are already calling it stat padding. You can only beat what is in front of you, and he’s clearly been involved every time France have looked dangerous.

At the same time, the thread has that familiar “yeah but” energy around it, with people pointing out the lack of goals and the fact that some of these games have felt a bit dead once the result was gone. Still, a record is a record, and if you’re breaking something associated with the biggest names in football, that’s proper serious stuff.

What do people make of it then — genuine elite tournament performance, or just a great player farming assists in a weird World Cup?

7 assists and still somehow people are acting like it means nothing, but honestly I just love seeing a player rack up a mad record like this even if the goals arent there, its still proper impressive and he must be a nightmare to play against

Stat padding or not this is exactly the kind of nonsense you want from your lad when the tournament is already cooked, just keep feeding the numbers and let the rest of them cry about it like proper nerds

Everyone in here acting like this is some cheap little stat pad job but if you are creating that many goals at a World Cup then you are doing your job and the rest is just noise, people only hate it because France have the numbers and everyone else is left looking silly, absolute meltdown over a bloke being brilliant

The cleanest way to look at this is that Olise has been the final action on seven goals, and that is obviously elite output no matter how people want to dress it up. It is also fair to say the tournament context matters, because some games have clearly been dead by the time these numbers were piling up, but that does not erase the quality of the deliveries. What I cannot get over is how quickly the conversation always flips from appreciation to bitterness, like people cannot just say a player has had an outrageous tournament without adding a little disclaimer. Then again that is football online for you, one minute he is a record breaker and the next minute everyone is screaming stat merchant and acting like assists do not count unless they are in a final on a wet Tuesday, honestly it is exhausting and hilarious and a bit pathetic all at once

France have clearly built a lot of their attacking play around getting Olise into the right areas. The numbers suggest he has been the main creator rather than just a passenger, which makes the record more impressive.

It is a strange record because it says both that he has been excellent and that France have had a very specific attacking pattern. Seven assists in one tournament usually means you are central to everything they do.

People keep going on about the assists but the real issue is how much stick he gets for not scoring when he is still creating everything and dragging France forward in every game, the lad is doing his bit and then some and half the comments read like he personally missed chances for everyone else too, he is not there just to bang them in he is there to make them happen and if you cannot see that then you are just looking at the wrong column and chatting absolute rubbish about a player who has clearly been one of the best in the whole tournament
