Olise’s World Cup assist record is madness

i dont buy the whole stat padding thing at all, if a player is delivering the final ball that often then he is still the one making it happen and its not like the opposition can just ignore him because the scoreline looks comfortable

Saw a lad in the pub earlier saying Olise was just farming assists and I had to laugh because the same bloke spent ten minutes telling us how his team would have loved a player who could actually create chances, proper classic pub logic that, one minute the record is nothing and the next minute everyone is acting like they knew it was coming all along, football chat in a boozer is always the same though, somebody shouts stat pad, someone else says record breaker, then the pint gets spilled and suddenly everyone is an analyst

The funny thing is people will sit there and call it stat padding while their own teams would kill for a player who can keep producing that sort of output in a tournament, like what do you actually want him to do, apologise for being effective, stop making the right pass because the game is already comfortable, that is nonsense and it always is when someone is on the wrong end of a record, the level of bitterness in these comments is mad and it just makes the whole thing feel bigger than it should be

It is easy to mock this as stat padding, but seven assists in one World Cup still means you were consistently deciding matches. At the same time, the lack of goals and the strange feel of the tournament do make the record feel a bit unusual, so both things can be true.

France have basically built everything around getting olise on the ball in the final third and it shows because seven assists doesnt happen by accident, but at the same time when the game is already gone it does look a bit like theyre just racking numbers up and thats why people are calling it stat padding even though the quality is still there
