Rings for the World Cup winners

On paper, this is a small ceremonial addition that does not affect the sport at all and will probably be forgotten by most people within a week, which is why the reaction is so funny because everyone is pretending it is some deep cultural battle when really it is just a shiny keepsake, but then FIFA always manage to make the smallest thing feel like a massive statement and that is why people get suspicious, because it starts with a ring and ends with a whole load of pomp and some bloke on stage clapping like a seal and I swear if they start turning the final into a full American style spectacle I am going to absolutely lose it
 
I do not agree that it is some harmless little extra because once you keep adding stuff like this it stops feeling like football and starts feeling like a theme park version of it, and people are allowed to dislike that without being told to get a new hobby
 
The sensible point is that this does not alter the competitive side of the tournament at all, so in isolation it is hard to get too worked up about a ring, but the reason people are annoyed is because FIFA have form for taking a tiny idea and turning it into a whole identity, and that is where the resentment comes from, because fans feel like every tradition gets chipped away at until the whole thing feels packaged and overproduced, and then everyone has to pretend that the packaging is the point, when really most people just want the football and maybe a medal and that is it, no grand ceremony, no forced spectacle, no weird imported cultural dressing, just the game and the trophy and a bit of dignity, which apparently is too much to ask these days
 
I actually think people are being unfair to the winners here because if you are the side that gets to lift the trophy then having a ring is just another memento of what you achieved and there is nothing shameful about that, plenty of sports do it and nobody acts like the world is ending, so why is football always the one place where any extra thing gets treated like a betrayal, it is a bit snobbish really, and the same crowd moaning about rings would probably be delighted if the players were handed some fancy watch or a special edition jacket or whatever, so I do think a lot of the outrage is performative and based more on hating FIFA than on the actual idea
 
It is a cosmetic change rather than a structural one, so the reaction is probably louder than the issue deserves. That said, I understand why some fans see it as part of a broader drift towards American-style presentation, and that is where the unease comes from.
