Absolutely mad seeing Sunderland qualify for the Europa League after just coming up. That is some rise, and fair play to everyone involved because nobody had this on the bingo card at the start of the season

Le Bris has to be right up there for manager of the season, and Xhaka getting singled out so much says a lot about the impact he has had. From promotion to Europe in one season is proper dreamland stuff

It also feels like one of those achievements that fans of other clubs can only look at and shake their heads at, because it is not just a good season, it is a ridiculous one

nah you cant just say its all down to one player though the whole squad and le bris deserve it more than people making it the xhaka show

The officials have had a proper laugh all season and people still act like this stuff happens in a vacuum when every big call seems to go one way or another and then you get these tiny margins deciding everything and suddenly its all about the fairytale club story while the ref gets away with another bollocks performance and nobody says a word because its Sunderland and everyone wants the nice narrative but the standard of officiating is a joke and it has been for ages

The key thing is how they have balanced control and aggression without looking naive. They have clearly got a manager who can adapt the shape and get the players working for each other, which is why this has lasted all season rather than being a lucky run.

fair play to them honestly nobody saw this coming and now theyve gone and done it in their first season back which is mad enough but the way theyve carried themselves all year makes it even better theyve got a proper identity now and it doesnt feel like a fluke

This is one of the most impressive rises I have seen in years. They were expected to just survive and instead they have ended up in Europe, and that says everything about the coaching, the recruitment and the mentality. It is the sort of season fans dream about, and if I were a rival supporter I would still be absolutely raging because it should not be this straightforward for a newly promoted side to look this composed, this confident and this relentless, honestly it is taking the piss

Theyve pressed really well all season and that intensity has probably been the difference between a decent survival job and a proper European push. When a promoted side can stay organised, win second balls and still hurt teams on the break, that is usually a sign the manager has them drilled properly

Honestly I dont even know how Sunderland fans are coping with this because one minute youre talking about just staying up and the next youre in Europe and the whole thing feels like some mad FM save that shouldnt be real and yet here we are and fair play to them because they have absolutely earned it and I know people will say it is all hype or luck or whatever but you do not get this far by accident you need proper belief and proper leadership and lads who actually want to run through brick walls and theyve clearly got all of that and more and if my club did this I would be losing my mind every single day

On the football side, the big thing is that they have not just ridden emotion, they have had structure and flexibility. That is what makes the whole thing so impressive. But then you look at the emotional side of it and it gets even bigger, because for a club with that recent history this is not just a good season, it is almost a reset of how people view themselves and that is massive in itself, proper club changing stuff
