USA humiliated by Belgium

Back in the pub during a game like this everyone starts acting like a pundit, and I had one mate who kept saying the USA would nick it because they were at home and another lad who was already calling Belgium washed, then the late goal goes in and the whole place erupts into laughing and shouting and someone spills half a pint because of course they do, and then the same mate who was backing the USA starts pretending he never said a word and it becomes this massive wind up session where everyone is taking the piss and replaying the goal on their phone while the poor American fan at the bar just stares into space like he has seen a ghost and it honestly felt like the sort of night you remember for the wrong reasons

It was a bad night for the USA, but Belgium deserve credit for staying patient and being ready when the match opened up. The late goal just made the result feel harsher than it already was.

nah i dont think this was all some giant collapse from the usa they just ran into a belgium side that knew exactly how to manage the moment and the red card changed the whole flow of the game anyway so acting like it was some fair straight fight is a bit much

The funny thing is everyone will focus on the drama and the memes and the late goal and all that but Belgium actually played the situation really well, they never got dragged into the chaos the way the USA did, they kept forcing the game into areas where the Americans looked uncomfortable and then when the chance came they took it and that is why this hurts so much because the home side wanted it to be about energy and emotion and hype and instead it became about control and composure and Belgium had both while the USA had none and now the whole internet is treating it like a public execution and honestly I cant even blame them because the way it unfolded was just pure embarrassment from the home side and the late Lukaku finish was the perfect punchline to the whole thing

There is an argument that the red card changed the emotional balance of the match, but Belgium still had to do the hard part after that and they did. The USA looked like they were playing on adrenaline and expectation rather than structure, which is a bad mix when the game gets tense. Also, the online reaction is somehow louder than the football itself, which is probably part of why these nights spiral so fast and why everyone ends up talking about politics, corruption, and humiliation instead of the actual goals

Belgium did not need to dominate possession to control the match. They were more efficient in the final third and looked far more settled once the game became stretched. The USA never found the right response.
