In-form Olympic to maintain derby dominance
Adelaide Croatia Raiders are 6th in the South Australia State League 1 standings, having amassed 15 points in their first nine games of the new campaign, one point fewer than Saturday’s visitors Adelaide Olympic, who are 4th.
The Raiders have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, losing three of their last five league fixtures, and they come into this game having lost each of their previous two home matches, calling into question the invincibility of their home ground. After a 4-2 loss at Fulham United, a 4-3 defeat at home to Adelaide Blue Eagles and a 1-1 draw away at The Cove, a theme has emerged - the Raiders’ games are high-scoring and open.
Adelaide Olympic, on the other hand, have won each of their last two games, a 2-0 win over Adelaide Cobras and a 2-1 success against Cumberland United. Both of those victories came at home, and their most recent away game, a defeat, suggests they aren’t invincible on the road.
A classic derby game
With both teams close together in the table, and both playing decent football, this game has more riding on it than most for both clubs. Adelaide Olympic have the better of the recent head-to-head record, but the Raiders have failed to win at home to Olympic in their last three meetings. The visitors have won the last two, including a 2-1 success in the 2024 NPL South Australia.
The Raiders play a very different style of football to their opponents, preferring to flood the wide areas and dominate games in transition. Their games are usually more open as a result, and they’ve tended to score and concede more as a consequence.
Olympic, on the other hand, are a midfield-dominated team who like to manage the game, controlling possession and launching attacks when they can. Their structure makes them susceptible to counterattacks, but they don’t press opponents high up the field, preferring to let the game come to them.
Going for goals
With so much riding on the match, it’s hard to tell which team will come out on top, but Olympic have clearly had the better of the two teams in recent meetings and come into this match as the form favourites. The odds for the home side are narrow, however, at 2.24, and we’re getting Olympic at 2.55 and the draw at 3.8.
That suggests that this is going to be a very close game, with neither side really jumping out as favourites, but we’re confident of an end-to-end affair when these two teams meet. As such, we’re backing ‘Over 2.5 goals’, which is heavily favoured at 1.5, and ‘Both teams to score - yes’, as there are likely to be gaps in both defences for the other to exploit.
