- Canada have drawn their opening home game in this tournament, scoring once and conceding once
- Qatar have drawn their last two games, including their most recent World Cup group game against Switzerland (1-1)
- Canada have won one and drawn four of their last five home games in all competitions
Tight fixture likely in Vancouver
With both Canada and Qatar on one point after one match in FIFA World Cup Group B 2026, this Thursday's meeting between the teams is one of the most intriguing in the group with the co-hosts sitting second and the previous hosts third.
Jesse Marsch was named Canada's head coach in May 2024 and has instilled a high-tempo, aggressive pressing game on his side that is geared around winning the ball high up the field and counter-attacking with speed on the break. Canada have the pace and quality on the wide areas to cause problems for any defence and are not afraid to overrun opponents.
His opposite number, Julen Lopetegui, has adopted an almost opposite approach since he was named Qatar coach in May 2025. He has created a disciplined team that does not take too many risks, prioritising the shape of the team and the ability to congest the central areas while countering with a good tempo.
Canada to hold hosts to a draw in Vancouver
The contrast in playing styles could lead to a chess match in which neither side gets many clear-cut opportunities to win and a draw appears the most likely outcome. Both teams will be able to find the back of the net at some point, but goals will be at a premium.
A 1-1 outcome is favoured here with both teams to score - yes at 2.34, under 2.5 goals at 2.04 and the draw at 5.68 all appealing. Canada have now drawn their last two matches, both 1-1, while Qatar were held to a 1-1 result by Switzerland in their most recent World Cup game.
Qatar’s Khoukhi a key player
Cyle Larin has been Canada's main outlet in the attacking area, with one goal in one World Cup group match so far. Jonathan David has scored two goals in his last five appearances for his country and is a threat, but the one who has been most involved in the build-up has been Promise David with one assist in one match.
Boualem Khoukhi has been a great target for Qatar in the air and is their top scorer in this group with one. But the man to watch for Qatar is Homam Elamin, who has one assist and is the team's only player that consistently drives the play.
