- Monterrey have won three of their last five matches in all competitions against Puebla, including a 4-2 home victory in August 2025.
- Monterrey’s recent results in Liga MX: three defeats and two draws.
- CF Rayados de Monterrey are winless in their last five Liga MX matches (LLLDD).
Sánchez’s side set to edge out Puebla
Puebla’s compact counter-punchers will face Monterrey’s possession-based approach in what should be an interesting midfield battle when the two Mexican outfits face off at Estadio BBVA on Wednesday. The bookies make Rayados favourites at 1.54, with Puebla massive outsiders at 5.31 and the draw at 4.25.
Interim manager Nicolás Sánchez has been getting his first taste of management since taking the reins in March 2026. The club legend has done a commendable job of keeping the team afloat, but his side are winless in their last five and currently sit in mid-table with around 15 points after 14 Clausura rounds.
Puebla are down with the dregs on 12-13 points, and they could do with an upset to potentially stay afloat, but we expect the hosts to nick this one as they did in three of the last five meetings, despite their poor form.
Transition football is Puebla’s modus operandi
Monterrey are a possession-first type of team, but they can also play on the counter, lining up in 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formations depending on the game state. Their full-backs get high up the pitch and their central midfielders orchestrate play, usually through Sergio Canales, who has been the creative heartbeat of this Monterrey team in 2025/26 for both goals and assists.
Puebla boss Albert Espigares, promoted from the youth ranks, has a 4-2-3-1 base, but he has been more concerned with keeping things compact and structured as he introduces younger players to his side. They are not prolific and tend to punish opponents on the break.
Rayo Vallecano’s Germán Berterame is a prolific finisher
With forecasts suggesting there could be some moisture on the field in Monterrey on Wednesday, the home team will need to stay compact and avoid getting exposed on the transitions. However, Rayados are the more naturally attacking team and always have the ability to break down teams when they are on their game.
We’re favouring the over 2.5 goals market at 1.58 here, because Monterrey’s attacking players are a class act and this fixture has a long history of goal-filled encounters. Germán Berterame has found the net in double digits this campaign and is the most dangerous striker on either team.
Esteban Lozano is a regular for Puebla, Bruno Barticciotto and Emiliano Gómez provide occasional sparks, but they are not consistent enough goal threats. Lucas Ocampos and Óliver Torres provide width and vision for Monterrey, ranking highly in the assists chart for the home side.
