Pace vs possession at Charlestown
Broadmeadow Magic should win the clash of styles at Charlestown Oval when their possession-based, combination-heavy game faces off against the hosts' more physical game. Broadmeadow sit in fourth place on the NPL Women's Northern NSW ladder with around 14 points from 11 games - just enough to be in the finals race. Charlestown are languishing in seventh on about nine points from the same number of games and need a win to move out of the mid-lower reaches of the table. Jason Konjarski's team have the style and players to get the job done if they can keep enough possession and get the ball to Lucy Jerram up front. They build their attacks with patience, but when they get their front three going, they can strike quickly and with devastating effect. Jerram, who consistently finds the net in high-scoring wins, can be Broadmeadow's most dangerous player when they have enough ball to get their combination play into flow. Chelsea Lucas is another threat when her side have room on the counter or from set pieces, while Ayano Kurosawa has kept them in games with some excellent goalkeeping.
Challenging game for Azzurri
Charlestown have around 9 points from 11 games in the NPLW, so they are not a bad side, but they have struggled when up against Broadmeadow's firepower this season. Azzurri have drawn 1-1 in their top-of-the-table clash, but suffered a defeat to Maitland and a 5-3 loss to Broadmeadow. Head coach Alicia Ferguson's team have plenty of structure and can control the game, but they need goals from Emily Diaz, who has been the main weapon up front. When she gets a good game, she can score two or three goals and turn a match. Melina Ayres and Kalista Hunter provide a lot of experience in the midfield and are usually the spark for attacks. Broadmeadow are the 2.1 favourites with the bookies, with Charlestown at 2.63 and the draw at 4.3, which seems to reflect the head-to-head record rather than the form coming into this clash. Konjarski, who is serving an eight-match suspension and has assistant coach Dean Cook stepping into the role, likes to attack and his team have been getting the job done lately. Backing Magic to snatch this contest seems the obvious play, but given their defensive record and Charlestown's attacking struggles, there is still merit in the over 2.5 goals market. If Azzurri can keep it tight and get their forwards in behind the Magic defence, then a close game or even draw is possible, although not likely.
