- Pumas UNAM have the best regular-season record in Clausura 2026 with 36 points (W10, D6, L1).
- Club America finished eighth in Clausura 2026, with 25 points, entering the Liguilla after an inconsistent season.
Pumas primed to pull off an upset in Clásico Capitalino
Pumas UNAM are unbeaten in April, topping Clausura 2026 as the first seed, and bringing a superior record to América into the Liguilla quarter-final at Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
América are odds-on favorites at 1.82, with Pumas at 3.95 and the draw at 3.68 for this opening leg of a two-legged affair where bragging rights in the Clásico Capitalino are at stake as well as a place in the semifinals of Clausura 2026.
Efraín Juárez, the club legend at the helm, has put the old ‘academy’ mentality back in Pumas, deploying an organised vertical system, aggressive pressing and direct runs that have disrupted opponents’ structures and transitioned into goals. Robert Morales has been the executioner, delivering decisive goals in recent fixtures - including the winner from the spot against América in March 2026 - while Uriel Antuna’s pace and directness has also caused problems for defenders. Antuna scored in the 2-0 away win at Pachuca that saw them finish as first seed, with Pumas holding opponents to one of the league’s stingiest defensive records.
Bragging rights and an semi-final place on the line
Brazil’s André Jardine has given Club America their best identity in years, although some recent results and displays have left a few question marks over whether he is the right man for the job.
While the possession-first, positionally structured playing style has served América well for the most part, with full-backs overlapping to great effect and the ability to dictate the pace of games, the team has lacked discipline in recent games and will face a stern test from Pumas’ relentless vertical play.
Two goals from Brian Rodríguez, one in the first half and another before the break, saw them to a 2-1 win over Toluca to put them into the Liguilla, but a lacklustre 1-0 home defeat to Atlas followed to close the regular phase. América’s best work is done by the individual brilliance of players like Rodríguez - who scored a brace against Toluca - and Alejandro Zendejas, who could cause a moment of magic from midfield in this game.
Both teams to score is the standout bet
Despite the Clásico importance, a tight and tense game is expected in this opening game with América’s home advantage, quality and better head-to-head record in this series probably enough to edge the home side.
But Pumas’ form, defensive solidity and ability to counter-attack and finish should give them enough of an edge to at least deny the home advantage. Pumas are unbeaten in April and will make it tough for América in the build-up, but the odds against the draw are not quite long enough to take on that result.
We’ll take a small stake on the ‘both teams to score - Yes’ market at 1.71 because of the way these two teams play and the firepower available to both in attack. Both are good on set pieces and have the players to put them in, so that could be where the game is decided.
