Cockburn City vs Subiaco AFC: State League title race too close to call
It is still too early to call the 2026 Western Australia State League 1, but with Cockburn City currently sitting just three points above 12th-placed Subiaco in mid-table, it is clear that a win here will be a major boost for one and a disaster for the other.
Cockburn City have had a mixed bag of a season with a recent record of W/D/L/D/L. The high point of their season so far was the 3-1 league victory over Joondalup at the start of May, but they are hard to trust as they come into this match on the back of a 4-4 draw and back-to-back defeats. They have shown they can be a force in the West Australian top flight and Kenny Palmer has moulded his side into a compact, organised and hard-working unit, with a knack for pressing the ball effectively and breaking out on the counter.
Subiaco on the up after Despotovski hat-trick
Subiaco AFC are in decent form following a 5-1 thrashing of Gwelup Croatia on Saturday in which Tomas Despotovski hit an astonishing second-half hat-trick. Subiaco have played their best football, but they are a possession side that will probe at the midfield and defence with combination play in a flexible 4-3-3, looking for wide runners to take advantage of any spaces they create in the wide areas. Marc Wingell's men have been helped this season by squad rotation and tactical flexibility.
Cockburn have the edge, but Subiaco can score
We're expecting an interesting tactical battle on Saturday at Dalmatinac Park between these two sides, but we're not convinced that either side can be trusted for a win at the current prices. Cockburn have the historical edge in this fixture and are at home, but we're giving Subiaco a good chance because Despotovski looks in superb form and this game will be played at pace on a cool, dry night under the lights. Cockburn's attack looks the more reliable of the two, with Daniel Robinson offering a direct threat to the Subiaco defence and Matt Bowen and Alex Guzman both scoring in last match's win, but they are more frugal in nature and average 1.6 goals per game. Subiaco can really put it in when they get going and have averaged 2.0 goals per game in their best three matches of 2026. Therefore, we're going for an entertaining 2-1 win for Cockburn, but the draw and a 2-2 draw look likely if Despotovski's hot streak continues.
