Local bragging rights and the three points at stake
A local derby is always a spicy fixture and Sunday's clash between Lake Macquarie City FC and Newcastle Olympic is no exception. The hosts are heavy favourites to come out on top against the lower-ranked visitors and this is reflected in the odds of 1.23 for the hosts and 8.3 for the away side. There is a significant gulf in the quality of each side which has been shown in their respective records in the NPLW this season.
Lake Macquarie are a possession based side who like to play a high tempo game and they have the quality and structure to play a pressing game against the ball. Gabrielle Blanch has fashioned a side that will play a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 and they are a team that will stretch the defence with width, quick transitions and overlapping full-backs. The firepower in the team is evenly spread across the front-line with Larissa Ryan, Kiera Bainsfair, Keziah White and Lauren Allan all getting on the scoresheet at regular intervals and captain Brooke Summers controls the tempo and plays some excellent set pieces from her midfield role.
Newcastle Olympic are a completely different type of team and have more of a compact, direct style of play. Harmonie Attwill's side like to keep the ball on the ground and play through the centre of the park. They will set their defence up in a compact shape and they will try to counter attack when they win the ball back. Young players Sophie McDonald and Sophie Walmsley are a real threat on the break with their pace and finishing ability, but Olympic have had issues with defensive lapses in concentration recently, costing them crucial points.
Lake City’s depth on the wings can win this match
Lake have a good blend of experience and youth in their squad and they have the depth in the wide areas to cause the Olympians problems on both flanks. The clear and sunny conditions, combined with the pace of the surface should allow for an open game and it is likely that the Lake City will get the win. A scoreline of 2-1 to Lake is possible but the 1-1 draw is not out of the question if Olympic can tighten up at the back. Olympic's best chance of getting a goal will be through Jemma House, a direct, powerful striker who is happy to run at defenders and is also a threat from set-pieces. Lake's recent form has been average at best and includes a 5-1 win against Broadmeadow, two hard-fought draws and a narrow win and one loss, but their home form against Newcastle should see them dominate and secure the three points in this derby. Olympic have lost four of their last five league matches with a 1-6 defeat to New Lambton and a 0-5 loss to Maitland and Broadmeadow respectively.
