Mt Druitt Town Rangers can capitalise on psychological hold over Rams
A New South Wales League One Men’s fixture between Macarthur Rams and Mt Druitt Town Rangers could be an intriguing early season match-up on Sunday with the two clubs seeking to set the tone for their 2026 campaigns.
Macarthur will be looking to stabilise after their rebuild for this season, but Mt Druitt will be looking to prove they are a real contender to return to NSW’s top tier at the first attempt after relegation.
Mt Druitt have a real psychological edge over the Rams to take into this game and it could be all the motivation they need to take all three points. Town Rangers have won the majority of the head-to-head contests between the clubs in all competitions stretching back to 2016.
Mt Druitt to make hay in an open encounter
In both clashes last year, they beat Macarthur by one- and two-goal margins and look to be better placed to start the season ahead of the Rams. Mt Druitt finished the 2025 campaign in strong style with a 6-1 win and an unbeaten run heading into this year.
Andrew Montgomery’s side are a compact, pragmatic unit that are well organised at the back, but can hurt opponents on the counter-attack and in transition. They are strong on set pieces and always have an ace up their sleeve in the form of a bit of flair or a long-range goal.
Daniel Wong is their main man for that and is always on the lookout for opportunities to drive the ball from midfield and create scoring opportunities for his teammates. They will face a highly aggressive, high-tempo style from Macarthur, who will look to press and rotate their players to suffocate opponents in their own half.
Rams have added attacking quality to rebuild
Daniel Mijovic has added youth and pace in key areas of the pitch to his side this year, but whether they can hold up at the other end remains to be seen. The Rams should certainly be more goal-happy in 2026 with the likes of Chan Yelchan, Olivier Beltran-Woodward and Christian Torrelli coming into the team, but this fixture could be more about the visitors’ momentum and mental edge.
Macarthur need a player like Paul Soravia, who is the experienced man in their forward line and was their main outlet for goals in late-2025 as he delivered points-salvaging goals. Jacob Esposito and Connor Spurway also delivered crucial goals during that spell.
But they lacked defensive solidity and, although there are plenty of goals in this fixture, Mt Druitt’s extra momentum and a psychological advantage should see them win it. A local derby and the possibility of a wet pitch could make this a more open affair than anticipated, but we’re going with Mt Druitt to win 2-1. The 1.78 odds on the visitors are a bit short for this game, but 3.64 on the home side are still too big and the Over 2.5 goals market is heavily favoured at 1.44.
