A real derby at the top of the table
Sunday's National Premier League NSW U20 derby between the Marconi Stallions U20 and the Wollongong Wolves U20 is arguably a greater game in the context of the club's respective pathways as both have well-regarded youth development setups and this has been a heated local rivalry for a long time.
But with the hosts top of the NPL NSW U20 2026 table after 16 games (W12, D2, L0) and the Wolves fourth after 16 (W9, D4, L3), there is everything to play for at the moment.
A win for Marconi on Sunday would extend their lead at the table and solidify their minor premiership hopes, while an upset by the Wolves would shake up the top four and boost their finals campaign.
Marconi have momentum, but Wolves can be very dangerous
Marconi are the favourites at 1.63 while the Wolves come in as outsiders at 4.16 and that about sums up the odds on this game, but we can't ignore that the Wolves are in solid form. Damian Tsekenis is leading the line for the Stallions, with a string of goals, but there is enough quality and depth in this squad to keep the ball and create overloads. Jack Armson and Matej Busek provide the attacking drive and goals from midfield, while Tsekenis is the set-piece threat that has led to two multi-goal wins in their last four games (6-0 and 3-0). Luke Wilkshire's Wolves play counter-attacking football with a lot of width and physicality down the flanks, looking to catch their opponents on the break and taking advantage of the space behind the high line of Marconi. Flynn Madden and Ryan Lowe are the goal threat for the Wolves and seem to get on the end of most of their chances, so expect them to get on the scoresheet if the visitors are to claim a result.
A tactical affair with plenty of attacking quality
This game is likely to be more of a tactical battle as both sides have a clear way of playing which is drilled down from their senior coaches.
Peter Tsekenis instills a similar style to the senior side - a possession-based approach to dominate the ball and control the rhythm of the game in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 shape, but with a high tempo.
Wilkshire's team have shown that they are happy to play a more pragmatic style, so expect them to sit in and soak up pressure, then transition quickly to hit their opponents with pace and power.
Backing over 2.5 goals seems the best option here as both teams are likely to be more positive than the early odds suggest, but Marconi have been the best side in the league by some distance so should edge a potentially tight contest with the Wolves defence likely to keep things respectable.
