- Universitatea Craiova are the stronger of the two sides on form, unbeaten five (W3, D2), and they dominated Universitatea Cluj 5-0 in Liga I Playoff action last time out.
- Maxline Vitebsk are more of a compact, controlled side, winning six, drawing three and losing only one of their last ten in all competitions, but they could still be vulnerable here.
- Craiova are a team of extremes, averaging 2.00 goals scored and 1.83 goals conceded per away game across all competitions.
Universitatea Craiova too open to beat Vitebsk
Universitatea Craiova enter Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Qualification 2026 game with Belarusian side Maxline Vitebsk, but there is enough about the visitors to suggest that the hosts will have to fight for their passage to the second round of qualifying.
Maxline are 3.05 to advance, which makes it a bit of a head-scratcher as to why Craiova aren't as long as 3.1 in the draw market. The home side have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five in all competitions, while the visitors have won seven, drawn two and lost just one of their previous ten. Craiova's form book makes them the clear favourites, but Maxline's stats don't suggest an immediate walkover for the Romanians.
Maxline are a compact, resilient team who like to keep the lines tight, move as a unit and spring forward at the right time. Magomed Adiyev's men usually set up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 shape, but they play with a low-to-mid block in the defensive phase and look to exploit the middle of the park on the counter-attack.
The Belarussians drew 2-2 away at FC Minsk in their previous match before beating Naftan Novopolotsk 2-1 at home. At home, across all competitions, Maxline have won two, drawn two and lost once, so the hosts are tough to break down, but they are beatable.
Craiova are a different beast
Universitatea will take the game to Hungary and that's why we're expecting a more open affair than Maxline would like. Filipe Coelho's side are built around their ability to play vertical, centre-heavy soccer and press from the front.
Craiova can switch from a 4-3-3 in possession to a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 when out of possession, which makes them a team to be feared. They arrive in Hungary in good nick, so Craiova can dominate the ball and it will be up to Maxline to withstand their attacks and counter.
As an away side, Craiova have won three, drawn two and lost once in six, but they do concede a lot of goals - averaging 1.83 per-game. Maxline have scored eight goals in their last five at home, so they have enough firepower to nick something if they can get a toehold in the game.
While Craiova can play a fine game of football when in the mood, they are also a side of extremes who allow plenty of chances, so under 2.5 goals at 1.65 appeals in the score line market. Both teams to score is a toss-up at 1.85 and Craiova's greater momentum should see them edge it, but Maxline's structure and home comforts make the draw a likely outcome in this chess match.
