- Melbourne Victory finished 4th in the 2025/26 A-League Men with 40 points - 1 more than 5th placed Sydney FC, who finished with 39.
- The Sky Blues won 1, drew 3 and lost 1 of their final 5 A-League matches, but are unbeaten since Patrick Kisnorbo took over as manager in late March.
Sides set for an elimination clash at AAMI Park
Melbourne Victory’s 40-point haul in the 2025/26 A-League regular season was only one more than Sydney FC’s 39, which means the two rivals will meet in an elimination playoff at AAMI Park on Saturday. The winner will advance to the semi-finals of the A-League Men Finals Series while the loser will see their season end, so there is plenty on the line in this showdown between the Big Blues.
Victory are the slight favourites at 2.08, while the Sky Blues can be backed at 3.49 and a draw is priced at 3.7. These two teams are so evenly matched, however, that the draw should have been shorter and we’re taking the ‘Over 2.5 goals’ line of 1.7, which is also attractive enough to get involved at. The two sides have been very close in recent seasons, with recent meetings often ending level, so we’re expecting a cagey, but intense, affair.
Kisnorbo’s Sky Blues are well-balanced
Patrick Kisnorbo has stabilised Sydney FC since taking over as coach in late March and his team will be a danger to the hosts if they can continue their unbeaten run into the finals series. Kisnorbo prefers his sides to be balanced, but with enough quality to hurt in numbers in the attacking third.
He tends to favour 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formations, with the ball dominating in the central areas and wide players looking to press and win it high up the pitch. The pressing game needs to be controlled and the team needs to stay compact enough to stop the opposition breaking through, but there is enough quality in the team to dominate the midfield and control the tempo of the game.
Sydney will look to Ben Garuccio, who scored in the dramatic 2-2 draw last round, to provide some of the impetus from full-back, while Alexandar Popovic has also become a threat from set-pieces and late attacking runs. The returns of Joe Lolley and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos for this match also give Kisnorbo a few more options to mix up his front line.
Victory will aim to punish any errors
Arthur Diles has instilled a much more attack-minded ethos in Melbourne Victory. Victory’s 4-2-3-1 shape invites pressure and transitions quickly, looking to score through the wide channels and late midfield runs.
They will look to their returning star Juan Mata for much of their creativity and with the Spanish maestro back in the line-up, they will be a threat to score at any time in this elimination final. Nikos Vergos has been a constant threat for Victory, while Clarismario Santos Rodrigues and Keegan Jelacic provide two other dimensions to their attack.
It’s all on the wire for Big Blue battle
Melbourne Victory have the home crowd advantage and will be confident of edging this one out with Mata back, but the way in which Sydney have played since Kisnorbo took over suggests they will be the minnow in this clash. Both sides can get it right or wrong in quick succession, but we’re going to take the draw and the Over 2.5 goals markets to provide some security in what should be a tense, tactical clash.
AAMI Park will be full for this A-League classic and under clear evening skies, we expect a single moment of brilliance or error to settle who keeps their Grand Final dream alive this year.
