- Nomads have scored 12 goals in their last three SPL matches, their last two away from home.
- Northern AFC have won two of their last five competitive matches, conceding 11 goals in that period.
Nomads vs Northern AFC: an even and interesting Southern Premier League showdown
Nomads United face Northern AFC in a South Island derby that could have a significant bearing on where each club ends up at the end of the 2026 Southern Premier League season. The home side, on 16 points from nine games, sit 3rd, while Northern AFC are 5th, on 13 points. A Nomads win would set them up nicely for a crack at the top two, but Northern AFC need the points to stay in the mix for the National Championship spots.
Matthew Jansen has implemented his favourite style of playing attractive, possession-based football at Nomads, who are a young and exciting team who like to play with the ball. But they don't just have the ability to play expressively, they've got a real edge, and can break with real pace. With Flynn Holdem, who has six goals for the season, they have the SPL's most dangerous forward, while Guy Reeves chips in with goals and creativity from midfield.
Northern AFC are a different proposition, and Arran Wilkinson's side are disciplined and compact when out of possession. They are a team that counter-attack with pace and tempo and look to be at their best when they can get their numbers forward and overwhelm their opponents with work-rate.
Lots of goals and a fascinating tactical battle in store
These two sides will have a very different approach to Saturday's clash and it's one that could really suit the Nomads, who are slight favourites at 2.04. Northern AFC come into the game at 2.85 and the draw is 3.84. A draw seems the least likely outcome, although it could be how this game finishes, as Northern showed their qualities when they won 3-0 in the only head-to-head in March's Southern League clash. However, Nomads have won their last consecutive away games and have scored 12 times in their last three SPL contests, so they are in good form and have enough confidence to push for the win in this fixture.
Northern AFC have looked a little unconvincing at times this season, however. They were thrashed 6-0 by Cashmere Technical a few weeks ago and lost 2-1 at home to Coastal Spirit last time out, while a 3-1 victory over Selwyn United was a step in the right direction. Northern will need to hold their shape well at Tulett Park and play with discipline to stop Nomads creating chances, but they will have a go if they can.
Both teams to score is the bet of the day at Tulett Park
There is so much to like about both teams to score in this Southern Premier League fixture that it's hard to resist 1.32 as the odds. Both sides have the firepower to cause each other problems, while the game should produce plenty of opportunities for both as the match unfolds.
Nomads are favourites for a reason, but after Northern's win at home in March, I think there's enough of an upset to recommend them in the double chance market for this game. Luka Mandich will be crucial for the visitors as he's the organiser in the backline and a set-piece threat, although he has recently had to deal with the team conceding too many goals. He is the captain, while up top, Alex Dale and Isaac Simons offer pace and finishing power. With local bragging rights and a significant chunk of momentum at stake, I think this South Island contest will be a close and intense affair that only Nomads can just edge.
