Oakleigh look to have the edge
NPL Victoria 2026 league leaders Oakleigh Cannons face off against 4th placed Avondale in a top-heavy clash this Friday that will be a test of both sides' title credentials. Oakleigh are the likelier winners, having won three of their last five in all competitions, but Avondale's impressive away record of four wins and five losses from nine means that the visitors will be a threat to the hosts on Friday.
Oakleigh have been in excellent form of late, picking up a vital win at Heidelberg United and grinding out a draw at the in-form Caroline Springs George Cross on the same weekend. They've won three and drawn two of their last five, and their overall home record in NPL Victoria 2026 of six wins, one draw and two defeats from nine is the foundation of their table-topping position.
Avondale will be a tricky opponent for Oakleigh on Friday, however. The visitors have a slight edge over the hosts from the last two head-to-heads in NPL Victoria 2026 (W1, D1), although Oakleigh have been in better form of late. Avondale are in mixed form themselves though, winning three and losing two of their last five, and they come into this clash on the back of a two-game losing streak following defeats to Dandenong City and Preston Lions.
An exciting game of contrast could be on the cards
Oakleigh are a side who like to dominate the ball in the centre of the pitch, with full-backs supporting their build-up play by moving forward and playing off the touchline, and their midfield pressing is also very structured. They're a team who like to control the game and will always surge forward late into the box and play over the top of the defence in numbers.
Avondale are much more direct and rely on their ability to break quickly and put the striker through on goal in the hope that they can nick a goal and pin their opposition back. They're a good side on the counter, and the contrast in approaches should make this an interesting chess match in the middle third.
Oakleigh are favourites for the win at 2.07, while Avondale are 3.01 and the draw 3.5. I think Oakleigh are rightful favourites here, but Avondale's threat on the break keeps this clash in the realm of an upset, particularly given that the home side have failed to win their last home H2H.
Over 2.5 goals looks a touch on the short side at 1.44, but the BTTS market at 1.4 seems a great fit for this lively clash in which Avondale should be able to create a few chances and both teams should be happy to press forward.
