Pine Hills to play their cards in local derby
Pine Hills will miss suspended defender Josh Matcham for the visit of Mitchelton FC in the Queensland Premier League 2 on Friday. Matcham’s absence could be felt at both ends of the pitch as the home side try to find consistency in their results in the bottom half of the division.
Mitchelton are also down at least one player after a suspension, but they still have numbers to cope with Pine Hills’ 4-3-3 system. The two clubs occupy the ninth and 11th spots in the table as of early June 2026, but are separated by just a few points.
That makes the victory a crucial prize for either club this weekend with a win likely to push them up several places and give them a much-needed boost in their battle against the drop.
Clash of control and chaos
Pine Hills set up with a structured 4-3-3 that looks to control the ball, press in unison and transition quickly when spaces open up. Mitchelton prefer a more chaotic style of play, with players interchangeable and attacking shapes that change constantly.
Mitchelton’s attacking players seem to get on the scoresheet in bunches, as their 4-3 win and 5-4 loss show. Ryo Asai, Aaron Doherty and Joe Royley have all got on the scoreboard recently, and this attack could be a handful for the away defence to cope with.
Mitchelton’s form has been erratic of late, winning one and losing four of their last five, so we feel the 2.16 favourite is a bit short for this one. Pine Hills have been inconsistent too, but Jay Broughton has proven himself to be a reliable source of goals in the FQPL2 and his team can push Mitchelton for the win.
Sides should share the spoils
The visitors are at 2.52 to win this and a draw is also offered at 3.95, so this should be a very close match. Mitchelton’s players don’t stick to positions so much as play where the ball is, while Pine Hills will want to control the pace and play the percentages. These two clubs are probably closer in ability than their odds suggest and, given their respective positions in the division, they each have plenty to play for in this one.
The last meeting in this division was a 2-2 draw with Pine Hills grabbing a point from two goals down, but Mitchelton won 2-1 when these clubs last met in 2025. Recent encounters have been tight, with draws and narrow wins dominating the record, so we’re backing the BTTS option at the short odds of 1.25.
Both clubs pride themselves on being community and youth development-focused, so there is plenty of pride and philosophy on the line in this derby match. Backing both teams to score seems like the only way to go here, given both sides' leaky defenses and recent high-scoring matches.
