Home team have a home field advantage
Playford Patriots will be a tough test for Adelaide Comets in the NPL South Australia 2026 mid-season 'report card' on Saturday. Paul Peck's side have become an extremely well-disciplined tactical unit since he took charge of the club a couple of years ago and are now dominant at home in South Australia in the same way the Central Coast Mariners are in New South Wales.
Peck has consolidated their NPL status in no time at all and the Patriots have quickly become a high- tempo, direct and aggressive team that plays with an attacking mindset to win the territory and create turnovers. Playford's midfielders are the engine room, triggering their pressing system and playing the ball into their mobile and dynamic forward line, who have made the Monex Stadium a fortress in 2026.
Their home form is an impressive W4, D1, L1 from six NPL games this season, although they have recorded just one win, three draws and a defeat in their last five overall. But this is a fixture in which both teams have one win apiece from the last two meetings, so the Patriots will not take anything for granted against an improving Comets side.
Comets may get caught in the midfield
Josip Čagrović's squad are going through a transition phase as they try to integrate young talent and new signings while maintaining the possession-based football that has been their trademark since his first season in charge. The young players have taken the lead in midfield, where the central midfielders need to link the defence and attack and resist the opposition press as well.
Their last three matches, in order, have been a 0-0 away draw at North Eastern Metro Stars, a 4-0 home win over Para Hills Knights and a 4-1 away defeat to West Torrens Birkalla. Comets will try to control the tempo and possession against a Patriots side that will try to get them out of their comfort zone in the early stages of the game.
The hosts are clear favourites at 1.49 to win, with the draw at 4.25 and Comets at 5.12. Given the Patriots are a much better team in the league and are at home, the draw makes some appeal if the Comets can avoid getting trapped in their own half for long periods of time.
Patriots at their best at home
But our preferred play here is to take the Patriots to prevail as their home goal record suggests they are likely to score more than once against a team with a poor away record. The 'Over 2.5 goals' option at 1.4 looks solid enough given Comets will have to come out of their shell at some stage in the game and Playford are at their most dangerous at home.
