New kids Prospect United look to make a mark in League One
Prospect United FC will kick off their inaugural League One campaign this season, and the first fixture marks an historic event in the club’s history as they look to shake up the state’s League One competition.
Darren Camilleri’s side secured promotion in spectacular fashion in September 2025, clinching their spot with a dramatic playoff turnaround.
The Canaries are a disciplined, defence-first outfit that look to shut the game up and hit teams on the counter-attack, although they’re no strangers to the odd late winner when the game is out of the reach of their compact blocks.
Gabriel Vulcik was a driving force behind their promotion-winning defence, and he also posed a threat from set pieces late in the season.
Praneet Singh is Prospect’s focal point up front, and the prolific forward top-scored for his club in their 2025 promotional campaign. Anthony Idehen, who finished 2025 with double-digit goals, also offers a sharp finish for the New South Wales upstarts.
The Mariners Academy will look to bounce back
Central Coast Mariners NPL were a far from solid unit, finishing 2025 in mixed form and ultimately suffering relegation. However, the Academy side return to League One with a fresh eye and a point to prove to their critics.
Philippe Bernabod-Madrid’s men were at their best when moving the ball quickly and making quick vertical transitions, but their high-tempo game required a lot of running and energy, which often led to lapses in concentration and, ultimately, poor defensive displays.
The club’s academy system is strong, however, and they have some exciting talent in their ranks. Captain Michael Paragalli, who is an exceptional leader and an accomplished midfield orchestrator, as well as youth international Jesse Mantell, who brings pace and technical quality to the front line, will be joined by Laurence Taylor, the creative midfielder who will be looking to make his mark this year.
An intriguing clash at the top of the table
With odds of 1.72 for the favourites and 3.79 for the long shots, the market makes it clear that it expects an away win, but Prospect United will be confident of at least getting a draw on their historic debut. The odds for Both Teams To Score also look a little short at 1.42.
This fixture will be an intriguing tactical clash of styles between a defence-first approach and a possession-based style. There is a good chance the scoreline will be close come the final whistle, so we’re going for a Draw or Prospect Double Chance for Friday’s game.
Prospect United have momentum behind them after their wins against Bankstown United (5-2) and in their comeback promotion playoff, while the Mariners lost 3-0 against Western Sydney Wanderers late last season.
