Fremantle can force their way to the top of the table
Fremantle City FC (W) will attempt to continue their title push when they take on struggling Sorrento FC (W) in the Western Australia Premier League Women 2026 on Sunday.
City come into this clash and move into third spot in the NPL WA Women's table. The Freo girls boast one of the best goal differences in the division, which they will improve upon with another win on Sunday.
Sorrento, who sit near the bottom of the NPL WA Women's on seven points, have only won one of their last five games in all competitions, a sequence that includes two defeats by multi-goal margins. Those reverses to Balcatta and Perth SC leave the Seagulls with a porous back line and no reliable goalscorer to spearhead their attack.
High-tempo Freo to dominate and dictate
Samantha Geddes' Fremantle side play a high-tempo, possession-based game with plenty of width in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 shape. The club's aggressive style of play and high-pressing game sees them win the ball in advanced areas and transition quickly, resulting in numerous high-scoring games and some fine results away from home.
Geddes has overseen some of the most exciting and effective attacks in the NPL WA Women, abetted by the likes of in-form Abbey Green, who has scored and orchestrated her side's 4-0 rout of Sorrento, and Lacey Heys, who brings creativity and energy to Fremantle's midfield and forward lines. Green and Heys are just two of Fremantle's attacking talents and a number of players are capable of stepping up and making a difference.
Sorrento’s stats don’t stack up against the odds
The oddsmakers are clearly siding with Freo to take this game at a heavily odds on 1.1 and the stats back up that view. The visitors have already beat Sorrento by 4-0 this season, while the home side have a poor defensive record.
Sorrento coach Adam Devereux has spoken about the need to rebuild and focus on development, so the club are unlikely to possess the attacking flair of Geddes' team. Sorrento's results have reflected that, with two wins over Subiaco and UWA-Nedlands, a draw with Football West NTC and two defeats to nil against Balcatta and Perth.
Backing the visitors to win and the game to feature over 2.5 goals looks a strong option here as Fremantle can cover those odds even if they don't get the full three points. Devereux's side are likely to play a defensive, compact setup that can frustrate, absorb pressure and hit on the break, while Fremantle will press, dictate the tempo and attempt to win the game in the first half.
