- South Melbourne are 4th in NPL Victoria Women with 30 points from 15 games (+21 goal difference) and are currently inside the finals places.
- Heidelberg United are 9th in NPL Victoria Women with 22 points from 15 games (-1 goal difference).
South Melbourne should be too slick for the Redbacks
South Melbourne (W) and Heidelberg United (W) have been rivals since their inception and this Saturday's game is a huge contest for both clubs as it marks a potential turning point in their respective seasons.
A win for South Melbourne would all but cement their finals aspirations, whereas Heidelberg United need a huge upset to reignite their season and lift themselves out of the bottom six and into the mid-table positions.
South Melbourne are 1.35 favourites to win this game with Heidelberg United distant outsiders at 6.16 and the draw at 5.05, which looks a bit short to us given the quality of both clubs.
Matsuda’s magic could be Heidelberg’s best hope
South Melbourne have been the better side in the last two seasons and the head-to-head history suggests they are the side most likely to take the three points again this weekend.
South Melbourne recorded a 5-1 victory over Heidelberg in April 2025 and it would be no surprise to see them win this by two goals or more on Saturday.
Head coach Matthew Shepherd has developed a smart, patient style of play for his young squad by combining youth and experience in a high-pressing system which wears down opponents and gives South the ability to freshen up at half-time or late on, with the bench often making the difference.
Heidi Dalton leads the line as South's clinical striker with multiple braces and hat-tricks to her name in the past three months, while Alexis Pantazopoulos adds a jolt of pace and can score and create in the top third.
Vice-captain Meisha Westland provides a set-piece threat and can play an excellent attacking midfield role, while Raquel Deralas and Emily Roach are further options and Roach has the ability to score from anywhere on the pitch.
Heidelberg’s defence still vulnerable
Heidelberg United head coach Dennis Georgakopoulos is a 2025 NPLW Coach of the Year winner and his side have shown the potential to be a force in this division with their possession-based, wide and fast-paced attacking style.
The Redbacks are in better shape this season, but still prone to defensive lapses that have cost them dearly in their back-to-back losses, and the 9-3 thrashing by Melbourne City, when their attacking play and clinical forwards shone.
Sawa Matsuda is the biggest threat Heidelberg possess and their best hope of causing a stir is to get the 2025 Golden Boot frontrunner into the game, so South Melbourne will target her and contain the rest.
Matsuda's pace and trickery will be a big factor, but Heidelberg's other forwards will need to be on form to penetrate the South Melbourne defence.
Goalkeeper Mia Bailey has kept them in games with some big saves, while Rosie Wild has plenty of experience and leadership skills to anchor the defence in front of her.
Steph Galea and Tamar Levin are good options to play up front when needed, but this is a big test for a young, improving Heidelberg United side that may need to play at their best to stay in it against a better South Melbourne team.
Back South Melbourne to win and take all three points at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday as Heidelberg United do not look to have enough to contain South Melbourne's superior quality.
