Two good sides set to go at it
Sutherland Sharks U20 and Blacktown City U20 have produced some thrilling, tight and highly competitive contests in recent years in the NPL New South Wales U20 competition and their clash on Saturday should be no different.
Sutherland are currently 12th in the league table with 19 points from 18 games while Blacktown City are mid-table in ninth-10th spot with 25 points - a significant six points better off.
The two clubs' respective youth programmes, coaches and styles of play are very different, but both will have their young players playing on the edge for the win on Saturday.
Sharks are the new kid on the block
Christopher 'Kiki' Naumoff has been in charge of Sutherland's youth system and has developed a modern programme designed to grow and promote talented players through to the senior side.
The Sharks' young team are possession based and usually line up in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, where the full backs provide width and the attack has the tempo and guile to carve out the chances to play through teams.
Sutherland's attacking players are a collection of young talent, who can score in bunches, as they did in their last away game when putting five past SD Raiders U20 in a 5-4 win.
They have had two similar high-scoring wins in their last five games, but three losses to go with, which suggests they have been a streaky team.
Blacktown’s pathway is proven
Mark Crittenden has been club head coach and maintains a structured, results-driven youth system.
The Blues set up to be compact and organised in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1, prioritising their defensive shape and ability to counter-attack at pace whenever they win the ball back.
Blacktown City U20 have been more consistent than the Sharks in recent months, winning three of their last five, drawing once and losing the other game 2-4. They beat St George Saints U20 5-2 and Sydney Olympic U20 3-0 in their previous two.
Goals, goals, goals on the menu
This is the type of fixture that usually produces goals at both ends, and with 1.28 available on the over 2.5 line, it is too short for our taste. That said, both teams have scored plenty of goals this season and Sutherland's defence has been porous.
With the match odds only marginally favouring Sutherland, we see this as a very even game and would look to the draw market or a one-goal home win.
Blacktown's attack has been potent, with 30+ goals already, and the front three have been in prolific form, scoring multiple goals in most of May's fixtures. With both teams looking to build some momentum and push the talent up to senior level, this will be a full-on contest.
The forecast is for cloudy and possibly rainy conditions, which could make the pitch slick and favour whichever team deals best with the transitions and second balls.
