- Island Bay United have won their last two Central League meetings with Waterside Karori, 4 - 0 and 4 - 1
- Waterside Karori have conceded 21 goals in their last five Central Premier League games, losing four of them
Island Bay United out to add to Karori’s misery
Island Bay United's recent form in the Central Premier League has been a tale of two sides with a couple of emphatic wins - including a 5 - 0 away win over FC Western and a 4 - 0 win over this weekend's hosts, Waterside Karori. Callum Holmes has added attacking flair to the side since he took over in late 2025, but they have continued to struggle at the back. In their defence, they have faced a couple of very good teams and also shown enough attacking quality to suggest they can keep the score down by staying ahead. Holmes' side play a direct style at high tempo, which should give the home side problems on Saturday. They press high up the pitch and look to get on the break as well as from set pieces, which they have turned into a very potent weapon.
Island Bay have the tools to exploit Karori’s weaknesses
Brendan McMullen is a constant threat from corners, free kicks and throw-ins and scored in the last head-to-head defeat of the visitors. Abel Nesibu's pace and ability to run at defenders from deep is another aspect of their attacking game and he scored in the 4 - 1 win over Waterside earlier in the season.
However, Tsar Mitchener is the league's in-form striker. He is the focal point of Island Bay's attack and should be a major threat to a home defence that has shipped 21 goals in four of their last five matches.
Waterside have lost four of their last five in the Central League, conceding 21 and scoring just twice, so it is no surprise they are at the bottom of the table on four points with Island Bay in mid-table on around 12.
Wet, heavy conditions suit Holmes’ side
Tomás Godoy Fouquet's side prefer to keep the ball and build from the back, with their best chance of causing Island Bay problems coming from the midfield where Tomás Alvarado is their lynchpin.
Jack Eccles and Oscar Crowe have chipped in with goals here and there, but the squad depth is not sufficient, and there is a huge difference in the two teams' playing strength. Holmes' men have been in emphatic form against their hosts recently, so the odds of 1.35 look about right with Waterside odds of 6.94.
A home upset could be possible if they keep it tight at the back and score with one or two chances, but Island Bay have won the last two meetings 4 - 0 and 4 - 1 and they can come away with three points on Saturday. The forecast of wet and heavy conditions could also suit the visitors more than the hosts, who will have to work hard to get the ball into the box.
There are no injuries or suspensions for either side that we know of and both teams will probably go with their strongest line-ups. The odds for over 2.5 goals at 1.48 look great value here, with both teams' recent defensive vulnerabilities.
Our score predictions of 2 - 0 and 2 - 1 to the away side reflect the recent dominance of the away team in the H2H contests and the fact that Karori have scored only twice in their last five matches.
