- Melbourne City won four of the last four competitive meetings between the clubs, including the 2026 Grand Final 3-1
- Wellington Phoenix reached their first Grand Final in 2025/26, finishing second and going close to toppling the champions
- City won each of their last five competitive matches, conceding just four goals in that run
No pressure on Phoenix to pull off an early season shock
Melbourne City FC (W) are the favourites to win Saturday's A-League Women 2026-2027 Matchweek 1 clash, but it won't be easy as they take on a team that defeated them 3-1 in last season's Grand Final. City come into the season red-hot, having won their last five games across all competitions while conceding just four goals in that period. The champions of 2025/26, they should have more of an edge against Wellington Phoenix (W) in this opener as the Nix had to work hard to even make it to the showpiece event at the end of the season. Wellington Phoenix finished the 2025/26 campaign with a 2-0 win over Adelaide before a tense extra-time semi-final victory over Brisbane Roar, so they will be up for this encounter. Bev Priestman's well-structured outfit, which combines high-intensity pressing with a compact shape, is a serious force in the A-League Women and should be a contender for many seasons to come.
City could be the pick on paper, but expect a close contest
The hosts finished their pre-season undefeated in three games, adding a little more bite to this fixture than normal at this time of year, although their opponents should still arrive in better shape.
Melbourne City are available at 2.26 for this clash, which seems a little low given the recent history of this fixture and Phoenix's price of 2.8. We're going to take the favourites as our main bet, although the 3.45 draw also holds plenty of appeal in this encounter.
City's style of play is one that should see them win the ball in a high percentage of the game, but their high pressing style means they will be wide open when they lose possession. Phoenix will sit in a compact formation and try to catch Melbourne City out in those transitions, but they can only win the counter-attack if they stay disciplined and avoid chasing the ball when it's not on.
City have the tools to break down Phoenix
Phoenix should have enough talent to get chances against City, with Makala Woods the top scorer of the club in all competitions last season and the main counter-attacking threat.
City are likely to have more of the possession and should have the quality to hurt Phoenix with their movement and smart, clinical finishing. Aideen Keane provides the drive in midfield and can play the link-up role in attack while Holly McNamara, who scored double figures last season, provides the end-product.
Brooke Nunn and Pia Vlok provide similar options for Priestman, who has a few different outlets behind the striker to play with, as well as Rebekah Stott, who will need to be sharp to resist the movement of City's players.
So a Melbourne City win looks the likeliest outcome of this game, but it should be tight and Under 2.5 goals at 1.95 looks a live alternative, especially if Phoenix can keep it tight and force a slog of a match.
