- Banbury United have won ten, drawn five and lost only three of their 18 home games in the Southern League Premier Division Central 2025-2026.
- Banbury’s boss Kelvin Langmead has been praised for his ability to control games with his side’s possession, tempo and pressing, whilst Royston have been dogged in their defence under Steve Castle.
- Royston have won two, drawn four and lost 12 of their 18 away fixtures in the same division and at the same stage of the season.
A clash of styles
Banbury United and Royston Town are both in a poor run of form and both in the bottom-half of the Southern League Premier Division Central as we approach the final quarter of the 2025-2026 campaign, with Banbury sitting in 12th with 53 points from 36 matches and Royston 22nd with only 22 points from 37 games.
Banbury are winless in their last five league games, losing three and drawing two, while Royston have won one, drawn one and lost three of their last five league outings.
The hosts are the clear favourites at 53/100, while Royston are massive 211/50 long shots and the draw is 29/10, so the bookmakers are definitely leaning towards a home win and rightly so. The 'Both teams to score - No' market is slightly favoured, suggesting a possible clean sheet, most likely for Banbury United.
Royston have never won at Banbury in three meetings
The last time these two teams met was in December at Royston Town’s Ground, the Royston Sports Club Ground, and the match ended 2-2. However, the last three meetings have been evenly split, with Banbury and Royston each having a win and a draw, and the hosts will be looking to maintain their recent edge over Royston on Friday when they meet at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.
Kelvin Langmead’s side have been tough to beat at home this season and have lost just three league matches there. The home side will look to control the ball, tempo and game, pressing high up and controlling the midfield before creating space for their creative midfielders to express themselves, and many of whom were new summer signings for the Purple Weed.
Steve Castle’s Royston side are a dogged defensive unit and have been since 2016, when he took over as manager. He has set up his side with two banks of midfielders in a low-block when out of possession and with the players’ organisation and set-piece prowess at the heart of their game, they have been able to stifle opponents. When on the ball, Royston are a direct side, playing at pace and trying to get their forward players in behind opposition defences.
The Purple Weed can win at home
Both of these clubs have been in poor form recently and they each bring a very different style of play to the pitch, so the clash on Friday could go either way, but the fact that Banbury have won 10 of their 18 home fixtures, are higher in the league and Royston possess an inferior away record makes them favourites to take the three points.
The visitors have won and lost one of their last two away fixtures, and they could still manage to get a point against a Banbury side that are going through a rough patch themselves, but the psychological edge of Royston never having won at their hosts’ place could be a telling factor.
The both teams to score - No bet is slightly favoured, so we are expecting at least one clean sheet and with Banbury having conceded just 19 goals in 18 home fixtures, it looks like the home team will keep their visitors at bay.
