- Gladbach have won one, drawn one and lost three of their last five Bundesliga matches
- St. Pauli have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five Bundesliga fixtures
- St. Pauli have won two and lost nine of their 13 away games in the Bundesliga, conceding 22 goals in the process
Gladbach and St. Pauli are a good matchup
Borussia Monchengladbach have had a tough campaign in 2025-2026 and are languishing in 12th place in the Bundesliga with 25 points from 25 games. They have been solid in home fixtures of late, however, winning one and drawing one of their last two, and their last three matches included a 1-0 home win over Union Berlin and away defeats to Freiburg and Bayern Munich.
St. Pauli are in the thick of the relegation battle and sit 16th in the Bundesliga with 24 points from the same number of games. They have one win and one loss in their two most recent Bundesliga away games, while they beat Gladbach 2-1 away from home in the DFB Pokal three months ago.
Alexander Blessin has turned the club into a compact, disciplined, low-block team since taking over in July 2024, while his players will be fired up for this relegation six-pointer after their cup win over the Foals. The club have had a good record against Gladbach in the last few years, winning two of their three away visits to Gladbach.
Polanski’s plans to bring verticality to Gladbach
Eugen Polanski has brought a pragmatic and structured approach to Gladbach since his appointment in September 2025. He has instilled a shape-first mentality in the club and a desire to control transitions with solid defensive organisation, but the main difference he has made is to bring more verticality to their game.
Haris Tabakovic is the main focal point of their attack, having scored 11 goals in 24 Bundesliga appearances this term, and Robin Hack has provided more of an outlet with his creativity and runs in behind. Gladbach will look to play a patient possession game in the first half and try to open up St. Pauli’s compact defence when they press.
Marcel Hartel is the engine in St. Pauli’s midfield, providing the transitions from defence to attack and creating some of the best chances for his side. Andreas Hountondji, who has four goals in 12 Bundesliga fixtures, provides a focal point up top, which should suit St. Pauli’s approach of inviting pressure on themselves and hitting on the counter.
Gladbach can get the better of St. Pauli
St. Pauli have been a tough team to break down since Blessin took charge because they are so well organised and selective with their pressing. But they will need to be very disciplined to keep a very talented Gladbach side out and we feel the home side will break them down at some stage.
Our selection of Over 2.5 goals at 127/100 is the best value available to us, as the current odds of 26/25 about the hosts winning do not appeal. We also believe both teams to score - no is an excellent shout at 4/5 as Gladbach should be able to control St. Pauli well enough to keep them out.
