- Charlton Athletic are winless in their last five matches (D2, L3), losing each of their last three at home.
- Ipswich Town have won three of their last five (D2), including a 2-0 victory over Norwich City.
- Ipswich have won eight and drawn five of their 20 away Championship matches this season.
Improved Ipswich should have enough to see off Charlton
Ipswich Town are strongly backed to see off struggling Charlton Athletic when these Championship 2025-2026 promotion chasers come face-to-face at The Valley on Wednesday.
Ipswich are third in the table with 75 points from 41 games, while Charlton sit 19th with 50 points from 43 after a disappointing season. The Addicks are winless in their last five, with two away draws and a narrow home defeat in that spell.
Kieran McKenna’s tactical acumen and progressive style of play have seen the Tractor Boys into the promotion race, and his side’s away form has been strong, with Ipswich winning eight and drawing five of their 20 Championship away matches this term.
They have scored 33 and conceded 27 goals on their travels, which equates to an average of 1.65 goals scored and 1.35 goals conceded per away game in the Championship - a ratio that suggests they are potent in attack while disciplined enough to keep the goals down.
Tactical clash in store
The game on Wednesday is a tactical clash in many ways with Nathan Jones’ Charlton playing a flexible 4-2-3-1 system that allows the players to move the ball quickly into wide areas and play direct when necessary. They have a high-intensity style of man-to-man pressing that should force Ipswich into turnovers, but McKenna’s side are usually more than capable of breaking through congested defences with their movement and rotations.
Jones has impressed with Charlton since taking over in February as they have a clear identity when they play, but the results are yet to flow. Ipswich are rightful favourites for this game at 71/100 because they are a better team with more quality and momentum.
Tractor Boys have enough quality to win
The Tractor Boys have won two of their last three away games and should have the quality to come away with the three points on Wednesday. Ipswich play a more possession-based version of a similar 4-2-3-1 formation, with their inverted wingers and overlapping full-backs helping to create overloads in the box.
Jack Clarke is their danger man with 14 goals in 41 Championship appearances this term, but Sonny Carey is Charlton’s top scorer with eight league goals. But Matt Godden has shown some of his old spark recently, netting two of the Addicks’ last four goals.
Our main selection is Ipswich to win outright, but we’re taking the draw no bet option as a bit of a safeguard against Charlton getting a goal. The home side have won only eight of 21 home games in the Championship this year, losing nine of those contests.
Charlton stunned Ipswich with a 3-0 away win in the Championship five months ago and a win apiece has been the result in the last two head-to-head clashes. But Ipswich have that little bit extra at the moment and should come out on top at The Valley.
Ipswich will control the ball and can exploit Charlton at the back. Back them to finish the job on the road.
