- The home side have a poor recent run with four defeats in their last five.
- Dungannon’s last away game saw them well beaten, 5-0 at Glentoran, but they’ve won two of their last three at Solitude.
- Both teams have been leaking goals recently, so an end-to-end contest looks likely.
Crucial Championship Group 2026 clash on the cards
Cliftonville FC are in the midst of their worst-ever run in Northern Ireland’s top flight, going winless in their last five games, the last four of which have all ended in defeat. Jim Magilton’s side have been well beaten in three of those matches, the most recent being a 6-2 hammering away to Coleraine FC. Joe Gormley remains their main outlet, but he’s had to score two of their five goals during this difficult period.
Magilton has been tweaking his tactics recently to try and get his team back in control of games and to get his players to use their physical attributes to best effect. Cliftonville have played some impressive football at times, using midfield overloads to dominate possession and control the tempo. However, they are currently failing to deliver in their set-piece and defensive line, and it looks like Magilton is in danger of losing his side.
Dungannon Swifts aren’t in much better form, with Rodney McAree’s side having lost four of their last five, including back-to-back defeats ahead of this game. Their most recent defeat, a 5-0 hammering at Glentoran, seems to be a particular worry as McAree has previously relied on his men keeping it tight, while they’re a real threat on the break. Dungannon have struggled away from home in the Premiership this season, picking up just five wins, one draw and 11 defeats from 17 away games, scoring only 0.82 goals per-match.
Dungannon can dent hosts’ title credentials
Cliftonville have the home advantage in this encounter and will be looking to reverse their recent form against a side who have already defeated them twice in their head-to-head. However, Dungannon, who are priced at 56/25, are more than capable of pulling off an upset this Saturday.
These two sides have contrasting playing styles, with Dungannon looking to keep things tight and then explode in transition, while Cliftonville have been the dominant side in possession, controlling the game with a range of tactical variations. However, given their recent results, it’s hard to favour Magilton’s men here, despite them being as short as 49/50.
McAree’s men have kept it tight and got their rewards against Cliftonville on a number of occasions this season, and a repeat of their 5-4 win from 13 days ago in the Northern Ireland Cup 2025/2026 is certainly within the realms of possibility. However, they won both of the last two meetings between the sides and have kept it close at Solitude, winning two of their last three here. Backing ‘Over 2.5 goals’ at 37/50 makes more sense in this clash of styles, while a ‘Draw’ at 5/2 is also not out of the question.
