- Cork City are the league leaders with 16 points from six games.
- Athlone Town are third in the First Division 2026, with 10 points from their opening six matches.
- Cork City have won all three of their home games this term, while Athlone Town have won one and lost two of their three away fixtures.
Cork City are in full flow
Cork City have responded well to the appointment of Gerard Nash as the club’s head coach in May 2025 and have been in brilliant form so far in the First Division, winning four of their last five league games and drawing the other.
Cork City have won both of their most recent league assignments, beating Longford Town 2-1 at home before grinding out a 1-0 win at UCD. The Leesiders are a possession-based team with a 3-5-2 shape that utilises the pace of their wing-backs in high-tempo transitions and overloading in wide areas. They also have the attacking talisman to finish the chances they are creating, as Sean Maguire has scored five goals in the last five games and makes the team tick.
Athlone are in the promotion race
Athlone Town, who are third in the First Division 2026, could join Cork City in the Premier Division if they can keep up their current pace, but their form has been mixed since the end of May, winning two, drawing one and losing two of their previous five league outings.
The Town beat Cobh Ramblers 2-0 at home last time out, but a 2-0 defeat away to Treaty United was a setback. Athlone are compact and play in blocks as a team, using their pressing structure to win the ball back and transitioning quickly to play through the channels in behind.
Patrick Ferry leads the line for Athlone and has two of the Town’s six goals in their last five league matches, while the visitors have been solid at the back, conceding an average of 1.33 goals per game on the road this term.
Cork City should have enough
These two teams know each other well and the form guide is not particularly useful in assessing this fixture, as Cork have won one of the last four meetings, Athlone have won two and one was a draw. But Cork City are the clear favourites at 33/100, while the Town are priced up as rank outsiders at 34/5.
Cork City are the only team with a 100% home record in the First Division 2026, while they are also the leaders of the table and have been playing some superb football. Athlone have been good, but this is a big step up in class and the visitors have failed to win on their previous two visits to Cork, struggling to get the better of Nash’s side.
Cork should have the firepower and the nous to make it three wins in a row, although it might take a late goal after some in-game changes and an increase in tempo to break down Athlone’s block. The ‘Both teams to score - No’ market is a decent one at 31/50, as Cork should have a better chance of a clean sheet than Athlone do of a goal at Turner’s Cross on Friday.
