Tempo vs tempo in London academy derby
Fulham U21 and West Ham United U21 will play out a London derby on Friday in a game that has extra significance for both clubs’ Premier League 2 playoff aspirations and the promotion hopes of their respective first teams.
Fulham U21 boss Hayden Mullins has instilled a tempo-based, attack-minded philosophy on his young charges since taking over in July 2023. The Cottagers play in a structured way, but still bring a high-tempo game, fast transitions and a lot of width when they go forward. This can be a recipe for catching opponents off-balance, as Chelsea Academy discovered when Fulham beat them 2-1 at home.
West Ham United U21 are not a high-tempo side at all with Zavon Hines preferring a more measured, possession-based style since he took over in October 2025. The Hammers look to control the tempo with technical midfielders, who Hines can deploy in various roles. Fulham’s style should test West Ham’s ability to get back into position after losing the ball as their style is more structured than any other PL2 team that Hines has faced.
Fulham’s head-to-head record and home form are key
Fulham U21 are the slight favourites for this game at 5/4 with West Ham at 37/25 and the draw at 139/50, but the difference in their league positions is clear to see with Fulham in fourth and West Ham in 13th. The Hammers have won only three of their 10 PL2 away games (D3, L4) and Fulham, who have only lost one home league game this season (W4, D5, L1), should justify their favouritism.
Both teams to score is heavily favoured at 33/100 for a reason as both sides are attack-minded and have had defensive issues this season. Fulham have scored 2.20 goals per home game and conceded 1.30 so far, which is pretty good for a fourth-placed side. West Ham have scored 2.20 and conceded 2.60 on the road in Premier League 2.
Fulham U21 have won two and lost three of their last five games after a 2-1 win over Chelsea Academy and 3-2 loss to Stoke City A. West Ham United U21 are also in mixed form with three wins and two defeats in their last five following a 3-2 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur A, a 4-2 loss at Derby County A and a 4-2 win at Blackburn Rovers A. Given the above trends, home advantage, superior league position and head-to-head dominance, Fulham should edge what could be a thrilling game.
