Qarabag to test the Reds in tactical battle
Liverpool, the bookmakers' favourites at 11/100, will face a tough test against European specialists Qarabag FK when the two teams clash in the UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 edition on Wednesday.
Arne Slot has overseen a calmer, more measured approach to the game since taking charge in July 2024, with Liverpool far more structured in possession and better at building up play. They are still fluid enough to deploy a 4-2-3-1 system with a front three capable of making runs in behind and a midfield capable of switching the ball quickly and intelligently.
While they have been pressing more to disrupt opponents in recent months, Liverpool are more effective when they set the tempo and create pressing traps in certain zones, as opposed to pressing all over the pitch.
Qarabag FK, meanwhile, will set up in a compact 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 hybrid, overloading the wings, progressing the ball vertically when they can and creating dense defensive blocks that invite the opposition on to them, pressing selectively.
Qarabag can trouble Liverpool on counter-attacks
Qurban Qurbanov has had a long time to instil his tactical philosophy at Qarabag, having taken charge in 2008, and the Azerbaijani champions are experts at getting results in Europe. Their signature result in this season’s Champions League was the 3-2 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, although they did lose 2-0 at home to Kapaz last time out in domestic action.
Qarabag sit 18th in the table, with 10 points from seven games, compared to Liverpool’s 15 points in fourth place. The visitors have a slightly streaky record of three wins and two defeats from their last five and could pull a surprise in this clash.
However, Liverpool have drawn their only recent home match and Anfield has not been a fortress this season. A home win with several goals looks the most likely outcome, however, because of Liverpool’s short price and Qarabag’s leaky away record in this competition.
Liverpool have too much quality to lose
Florian Wirtz has been in good form for Liverpool, notching two goals in his last five, but Dominik Szoboszlai remains their greatest attacking threat, scoring four in seven Champions League games this term. Qarabag can deploy Camilo Duran up front and he has four Champions League goals in seven appearances.
Over 2.5 goals at 7/20 is ridiculously short, but still makes sense given both teams’ attacking quality. Liverpool’s recent 3-0 away win over Olympique Marseille in the Champions League was their best result in their last five in all competitions, although they followed that up by losing 3-2 at Bournemouth in the Premier League.
