Shades of change at Northampton Town
A trip to Luton Town on Wednesday is not likely to lift Northampton Town’s spirits after a rotten run of five consecutive defeats, which included three away defeats, culminating in a 4-1 drubbing at Mansfield Town on Saturday.
Northampton are in 23rd place in the League One 2025-2026 table with only 35 points from 41 games and have 14 away defeats in 21 matches this season. Colin Calderwood has done a brave job so far in the wake of the club’s off-field difficulties, but he has inherited a poor squad and continues to struggle.
Luton Town currently sit in 10th place in the table with 61 points from their 41 matches played so far, but their recent form has been much improved. Jack Wilshere has overseen an unbeaten five-match run, which has given his squad a much-needed identity.
Luton can capitalise on Cobblers’ woes
Luton’s recent two-match winning streak includes a 2-1 home win over Peterborough United and a 3-0 win at AFC Wimbledon. Northampton lost 4-1 away at Mansfield Town and 3-1 at home to Wigan Athletic in their last matches.
Luton are a pragmatic side with a shape-shifting style, but they are usually well-organised and strong at the back, a threat from set-pieces and dangerous in transition. Northampton are a direct side with a similar threat in the second balls and counter-attack, but they are more likely to try and win the ball high up the pitch with an aggressive pressing game.
Jordan Clark leads the Luton attack in League One with 11 goals in 35 appearances, while Tom Eaves has eight goals in 30 for Northampton, although two of the last three goals have been scored by Cameron McGeehan. Luton’s average of 1.57 goals per home match is more than double the away average of Northampton (0.67), while the Cobblers have conceded an average of 1.71 per away outing.
Luton to bounce the visitors
We’re backing Luton Town to beat Northampton Town at 37/100, which are decent-value odds for the hosts given their recent strong form and Northampton’s ongoing struggles.
The value odds are a bit of a distraction and we are more interested in the possibility of a high-scoring match given Northampton will be throwing everything forward at some point in the match. The odds of 31/50 for over 2.5 goals are decent, but we’ll settle for both teams to score at 4/5 in what is likely to be an open affair between two clubs with different tactics that are set for a collision at some stage of the match.
