- Bayern Munich have won 6 of their 8 all-time competitive H2H meetings with PSV Eindhoven, including both 2016 - 17 UCL group stage games
- PSV are the runaway leaders of the Dutch Eredivisie with 52 points from 19 games
- Bayern Munich are also top of their domestic league with 50 points from 19 matches
Bosz’s boys won’t be baying at Bayern
PSV Eindhoven will face one of the toughest challenges in this Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 league-phase match against FC Bayern Munich, who are already among the top eight and very close to securing a top seed when the points are settled on Wednesday.
The Dutch champions were also top dogs in their domestic Eredivisie, winning it in 2024 and 2025 with the same high-press, possession-based game plan that Peter Bosz has used to create an impressive, all-action team. They’ve been nearly unstoppable in the Eredivisie this season, topping the table with around 52 points after 19 matches and boasting long winning streaks domestically.
But European results have been more mixed, with a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle their worst result, but a 2-1 win over Fortuna Sittard at the weekend with late goals when Ivan Perišić was on top of his game again and Paul Wanner was making his mark on the game.
The loss of star striker Ricardo Pepi to a broken forearm is a serious blow to PSV’s chances of getting anything from this clash, with the young American unavailable for the fixture.
Kompany’s Bayern can dominate possession and transitions
Kompany’s Bayern have been electric in the Bundesliga with eight goals in one match against Wolfsburg and five in a recent 5-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig, while their 2-0 Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise was a little misleading as they could have scored many more goals.
Bayern have a little bit of the best of both worlds, combining possession-based football with intense pressing and quick transitions in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system that is flexible enough to change from one to the other and back.
Under Kompany, the young players have integrated well, Harry Kane has taken to the system and Bayern are scoring more goals than ever, while they’re also solid at the back and capable of sitting back and soaking up pressure when necessary. They are a formidable force, capable of matching and mixing it with anyone in world football.
PSV in good shape at home and in Europe
PSV are in great form in the Netherlands, but they can’t quite match Bayern in terms of quality, experience or current momentum. And while the long odds for PSV at 71/20 and the draw at 69/20 look tempting, the bookies have got it right when they make Bayern Munich 3/5 favourites for this clash.
The cold, damp conditions in Eindhoven will probably suit the organised defending of the visitors and they’ll welcome any physical battles that might ensue in midfield, but PSV’s game plan is more suitable for the summer and they won’t be able to get Bayern playing on the turn in this one.
The home side are likely to get the better of the second balls, but the visitors will control the ball more and have much more of a chance to create and score goals with Harry Kane leading the line. The Bayern star is leading Bayern’s Champions League scoring charts with seven goals and put two past Union SG in his last appearance in the competition.
Kimmich the mastermind in the middle
Joshua Kimmich is the mastermind in the centre of the pitch when fit, while Jamal Musiala’s return from injury has provided a potential game-changer off the bench.
PSV are equally strong in the final third, with Perišić a real big-game threat, particularly from set pieces, and young Paul Wanner making a big impact on the club since arriving from Bayern.
Matěj Kovář has been superb since taking the goalkeeper spot at PSV. He has impressed with his shot-stopping and distribution to start the ball off from the back.
But Bayern are the champions of Europe with multiple titles and have dominated this fixture over the years. So, although PSV are a very good club with some European pedigree, Bayern remain favourites here.
