- Puebla and León will try to lock in their play-in spots with wins on Saturday.
- León’s recent style under Gandolfi is more aggressive, fast and direct than Puebla.
- Puebla have conceded at least one goal in four of their last five Liga MX fixtures, while León has often traded goals in open contests.
Puebla and Leon can play open, exciting football
Puebla and León, who are separated by only three points in the Liga MX Clausura standings, will be desperate to take all three points on Saturday when they face each other at Estadio Cuauhtémoc. León are in 10th place on 16 points and Puebla are 15th on 13, both well within the group of teams fighting to make the postseason in the final few weeks of the regular season.
León’s form has been a little better of late with both wins and defeats in their last five, but they come into this on the back of a confident 2-0 home win over Atlas. Puebla, meanwhile, are without a win in five games, having drawn three and lost two. León are the slight favourites at 46/25, with Puebla at 13/10 and the draw at 51/20, which is a little odd given the visitors have a marginally better league position and form than the home side.
The ‘Over 2.5 goals’ market, priced up at 7/10, is my main pick for this Clausura fixture because it suits the current models better. The head-to-head record is level with each side taking two wins apiece and one draw in their five most recent meetings, which included a 5-4 Puebla victory in November 2023.
Puebla are more structured and Leon are more adventurous
Albert Espigares is a youth-oriented coach who was promoted to manager in November 2025. He has been patient while trying to install his ‘discipline first’ philosophy, which involves creating a compact 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation that sets up with selective pressing, good defensive structure and a build-up style.
Javier Gandolfi has also been given little time to make a mark since stepping up after the resignation of Nacho Ambriz in March 2026, but the results so far indicate his methods are a bit more adventurous. León have certainly pressed more, played faster and been more direct under his watch and it is easy to see how this could put a more cautious Puebla under pressure.
Kevin Velasco and C. Baltazar are Puebla’s chief creators, although they will need to be on top of their game against a team that likes to press and move fast. León have a talismanic goal-getter in Díber Cambindo, who is top of their charts. They also have some good service, especially from Ismael Díaz and Daniel Arcila, who have chipped in with goals and assists.
León can nick it in an open affair
Both teams are without any reported major injury issues and neither coach is likely to play a weakened team, so all the ingredients are there for another exciting matchup of two sides that can play attacking football. The draw could be the preferred option in the outright markets because of the evenness of the head-to-head, but León have a slight edge in form and position and could nick it if cool, damp conditions make the pitch slick for fast transitions.
E. Guerra is Puebla’s highest scorer this term, which says a lot about their problems in front of goal this season. A win would be a big boost for León to secure their play-in position, but Puebla desperately need to return to form with a victory to keep their hopes alive.
