- Montrose’s away record includes three wins from 17 games in League One 2025/2026.
- Queen of the South have won three of the last five meetings with Montrose (D0, L2).
- Montrose have won only one of their last five League One fixtures and lost each of the most recent three.
Hosts are hard to beat at home
Two League One clubs, very close in the table, meet on Saturday when Queen of the South play host to Montrose at Palmerston Park.
The Doonhamers are 4th, 50 points from 34 games, while the visitors are 6th with 41 points from the same number of matches. Queen of the South have been steady and resilient in recent months, winning once and drawing four of their last five League One games.
Peter Murphy, who took over in May 2024, has made Doonhamers a very solid, risk-averse side who set up in a compact 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1 system. Harry Cochrane offers composure and control in the centre of the pitch, giving the club the midfield platform they need to patiently build up and play with possession.
Reece Lyon, Doonhamers’ leading scorer with nine goals in League One 2025/2026, is their main threat up top, netting three goals in the last five games. Queen of the South have won eight, drawn five and lost four at home in League One 2025/2026, so the hosts are very hard to oppose, especially on the back of one win and one draw in the previous two at Palmerston.
Montrose are poor travellers
Montrose, meanwhile, have been on a wobbling streak of late, losing their previous three and winning just one of their last five, which has cost them some ground in the promotion race. Stewart Petrie has been in charge of the club for years and he still plays with direct, physical football, usually in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system.
His team are set up to play fast and can be dangerous on the counter-attack. Blair Lyons has been Montrose’s spark up front, scoring three of their last five goals, so he could be a threat for the visitors. Callum Sandilands has been their main man up front, though, with 10 on the board in 2025/2026.
Montrose have won only three of 17 away fixtures in League One 2025/2026 and are winless in their previous two away games, taking just one point on the road. They also beat their hosts in the reverse fixture, winning 3-2 at Links Park in League One 2025/2026 eight weeks ago.
Doonhamers should get the win
This is a clash of contrasting styles, with Queen of the South wanting to dominate and control the game while Montrose are more aggressive and like to counterattack. Backing the hosts to win is the play here, given how strong they are at Palmerston Park and how poor Montrose have been on the road this season.
The Doonhamers’ final home game of the regular season is also their awards night, so that may give them a little extra incentive to perform well and the home crowd should make plenty of noise. We’re expecting a lively affair here with goals at both ends, so Over 2.5 goals is a top price, while Both Teams to Score - Yes looks good as well.
Queen of the South average 1.71 goals per home game while Montrose have netted 21 times on their travels, so the odds on offer are fair enough.
