- Saint Mirren FC have won the last two Scottish League Cup meetings with Partick Thistle, including a 2-0 victory at St Mirren Park in July 2021.
- Partick Thistle are 2nd in the Scottish Championship, having accumulated 49 points in 27 games, putting them in contention for automatic promotion.
- Saint Mirren are 10th in the Scottish Premiership with 24 points from 29 games, reflecting a challenging league campaign.
Saint Mirren are the favourites, but Partick are capable of a shock
St Mirren FC are favourites to see off a talented, physical Partick Thistle side in Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final at The SMiSA Stadium, but the visitors, who are selling out their away allocation, can make a game of it.
Stephen Robinson’s St Mirren side have been uncharacteristically inconsistent in the league this term, falling 0-5 at home to Motherwell in one of their last five Premiership games - three of which they lost.
However, the Buddies have been in good form in the Scottish Cup, defeating Airdrie 2-1 in their last match, with a place in the semi-final and a trip to Hampden at stake on Sunday.
Robinson, who likes to get his side to sit compact and defend deep with disciplined pressing and quick counters, has been getting his message across in the cup as St Mirren can be ruthless on the break with their wing-backs and forwards.
Logan Chalmers is the catalyst for Partick’s wing attacks
Mikaël Mandron leads the line as their top scorer in 2025-26, but the physical Frenchman can be a handful in the air and a tough marker for defenders.
Jonah Ayunga has scored some big goals and can be a direct threat from set pieces, while Killian Phillips and Daniel N’Lundulu offer rotation options and a creative spark in the midfield and attack.
Mark Wilson has done a wonderful job at Partick and deserves all the plaudits he has received this season for his flexible 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 formation, which involves playing direct wingers, pressing aggressively and switching to attack.
Logan Chalmers, one of Partick’s top scorers in the Championship this term, can be a thorn in opposition sides when given space to run at them from wide areas.
Wilson’s team are undefeated in six matches in all competitions, having held on to a 3-2 Scottish Cup win over Elgin City last month and showing plenty of character with several draws in recent matches.
Partick can make the tie interesting
Tony Watt provides experienced and clinical finishing, Ben Stanway has the pace to surge into the box and has contributed goals from midfield this season, while Oisin Smyth and Alex Samuel have also registered goals and assists.
Partick won at St Mirren in January 2016, their most recent cup win over the Buddies, but St Mirren have the upper hand in recent head-to-head games across all competitions.
Backing the home side, who should have the edge in experience and quality with their top-flight pedigree, to secure a narrow victory is our selection at 23/25, although Partick’s good run in the cup and the passionate away following they will bring to Paisley can ensure this clash goes to the wire.
Partick can reach their first Scottish Cup semi-final since 2001-02, but it is more likely to be a cagey affair given their similar defensive records, so we are taking the Under 2.5 goals option at 17/20 rather than the goal markets.
Referee David Dickinson and VAR Greg Aitken are in charge of Sunday’s Scottish Cup clash at The SMiSA and both men will be aware that a decision in this game could be pivotal.
