- Stockport County have won two and lost one of their last three meetings with AFC Wimbledon.
- Stockport have won ten of their 18 home League One matches this season, scoring 28 goals at Edgeley Park.
- AFC Wimbledon have conceded an average of 1.89 goals per game on the road this term, winning six, drawing four, and losing nine.
Dogs should be too good for Dons
A 1-0 home win over AFC Wimbledon in League Two last season has been followed by two further Stockport County wins in the last three meetings between the two clubs, although Johnnie Jackson’s Dons claimed one victory in those three.
This season, Dave Challinor’s County have looked more like a team capable of challenging for promotion to the Championship than one that will need to battle for the playoffs, currently sitting fifth in the third tier on 60 points from 37 games.
County’s recent form has been a mixed bag of two wins, one draw and two defeats from their last five League One fixtures, but a 2-1 home success over Northampton Town and 1-1 draw away to Luton Town shows their ability to get results both at home and away.
Dons, meanwhile, are 14th in the division, with 50 points from 38 matches, suggesting they will do little more than secure safety for another season.
Dons’ system first approach
Saturday’s game will feature a clash of styles with the home side pressing relentlessly and looking to punish the opposition on the break, while Wimbledon prefer a more steady approach, using their wing-backs to create opportunities from wide areas.
Jackson’s Dons have been solid in the main this term, despite not having the biggest resources, thanks to his structured approach to the game and ensuring his team maximise the chances they create from wide and set-piece situations.
Challinor’s system-first philosophy has also served County well this year, with Oliver Norwood, who has scored two goals in his last five appearances, a key figure in their recent resurgence.
County can win a goal-filled encounter
Kyle Wootton is the talisman up front for Stockport, who have scored 28 times in 18 home matches this campaign. So we’re backing a County win, over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
The odds on the hosts are tempting at 31/50, over 2.5 goals are priced at 17/20, while BTTS - Yes is 83/100. Wimbledon’s Marcus Browne will also have his say, however, having scored 12 times in 34 League One appearances this campaign.
